This position offers an opportunity to work within the Directorate of Examination, State and Land Reform Surveys Services in Limpopo, based in Polokwane. As a Cadastral Officer, you will be part of a team responsible for the integrity and maintenance of South Africa’s cadastral survey system, which underpins land ownership and land reform. The role is technical and detail-oriented, requiring a solid understanding of geomatics, spatial data, and the legislative processes that govern survey records. The department is specifically targeting Coloured, Indian and White males and females, as well as persons with disabilities, to meet its employment equity objectives, so candidates from these groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
To be considered for this role, applicants must hold a Grade 12 Certificate and a National Certificate in Geomatics or a Survey Officer Certificate at NQF Level 5, along with completion of the prescribed training required to fulfil the qualification. Practical knowledge is essential, including computer literacy, an understanding of spatial data, and familiarity with the functions of Surveyors’-General Offices. The role also demands strong interpersonal relations, good verbal and written communication skills, proficiency in computer software, and sound organisational ability. These competencies are necessary to manage the complex flow of cadastral documents and spatial information handled daily.
The duties are extensive and centre on the accurate capture, maintenance, and updating of both alpha-numeric and spatial data. You will capture information from newly submitted cadastral documents, perform mathematical consistency checks, and verify data for proposed new land parcels. You will also update cadastral survey databases by adding or amending approved documents, and you will capture and verify historical cadastral records. A significant part of the work involves maintaining these documents in line with legislated processes, including withdrawing or cancelling documents, endorsing them with registered land parcels, leases or servitudes, and amending approved records. You will also be responsible for inserting new documents into the archive, extracting and issuing cadastral records, refiling returned records, and repairing documents to keep them in usable condition.
Technical examination is another core responsibility. You will check the designations of newly submitted lodgements, update noting sheets, and perform technical examinations of diagrams, general plans, survey records, and sectional title plans. The role also involves supplying cadastral information to both internal and external clients, including issuing survey data to land surveyors, disseminating information to the public in hard copy or digital formats, and providing aerial photographs, rectified imagery, and maps from the National Geo-spatial Information (NGI) according to signed service level agreements. Additionally, you will capture and maintain spatial data by checking for spatial overlaps prior to approval, adding newly created land parcels to spatial datasets, and updating historical data. Scanning duties are also included, such as scanning newly approved documents, re-scanning updated documents, and linking scanned images to the alpha-numeric data. This is a demanding but rewarding role for someone who values precision and public service in the land administration sector.
