This position offers an opportunity for a qualified economist to contribute directly to the economic transformation agenda within the Mpumalanga provincial government. Based at the Nkangala District Office in Emalahleni, the Business Economist for Economic Empowerment operates within the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, focusing on the practical implementation of broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) policies. The role is central to ensuring that the provincial economy becomes more inclusive by supporting the growth of BEE-compliant enterprises and monitoring compliance across all sectors. It is an OSD-graded post at a junior professional level, ideal for someone with a solid academic foundation in economics or business management and at least two years of hands-on experience in an economic empowerment environment.

The successful candidate will be expected to possess a SAQA-recognised NQF level 6 tertiary qualification in Economics or Business Management, coupled with a working knowledge of the BBBEE Act, the Codes of Good Practice, Sector Charters, the Employment Equity Act, and both provincial and national macro-economic policies. Strong verbal and written communication, analytical thinking, and presentation abilities are essential, as is computer literacy. A valid driver’s licence is also required, as the role involves engagement with stakeholders across the district and potentially the wider province.

In terms of daily responsibilities, the Business Economist will facilitate the establishment of BEE firms within the beneficiation chain, helping to integrate black-owned enterprises into value-adding processes. The role also involves monitoring the implementation of BBBEE codes and sector codes across all sectors of the provincial economy, ensuring that both government and private sector entities are adhering to the regulatory framework. Another key duty is to facilitate procurement opportunities for BEE establishments, working with both public and private buyers to redirect spending towards empowered suppliers. The incumbent will also support the activities of the Provincial BBBEE Advisory Committee, providing administrative and analytical assistance as needed. Maintaining an up-to-date database of BEE companies is a further responsibility, which will serve as a reference point for procurement decisions and policy monitoring. Finally, the role requires advising stakeholders from both the private and public sectors on BEE-related matters, clarifying requirements and promoting best practice.

Applicants should note that this is a government position with specific conditions attached. Shortlisted candidates will need to produce certified documents before interviews and, if applicable, provide proof of SAQA evaluation for foreign qualifications. Candidates must also disclose any directorship, shareholding, or business dealings with organs of state, as well as any additional remunerative work outside their official duties. The selection process may include practical exercises, integrity assessments, and personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, financial standing, qualifications, and employment history. The successful appointee will be required to sign an annual performance agreement and disclose financial interests each year. The department reserves the right not to fill the post, and only shortlisted applicants will be contacted. Applications are submitted online via the provincial e-recruitment portal, and no manual or emailed submissions are accepted. This is a meaningful career opportunity for an economist passionate about economic transformation and inclusive growth in Mpumalanga.
