This position offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced journalist to join the SABC News Channel as a Bulletin Writer, reporting directly to the Bulletin Editor. The role is central to the public broadcaster’s mandate to deliver compelling, incisive and high-quality television news content that serves the South African public. As a Bulletin Writer, you will be responsible for shaping the daily news output, ensuring that stories are accurate, factual, and presented in a crisp, engaging style that aligns with the SABC’s house style and editorial standards. This is a deadline-driven environment where journalistic integrity, speed and precision are paramount.
To be considered for this role, candidates must hold a National Diploma or NQF Level 6 qualification in Journalism, Media Studies, or an equivalent field. A minimum of four years of proven experience in writing and producing news bulletins is required, along with a thorough understanding of the regulations and legislation that impact broadcasting in South Africa. You should also have a sound grasp of current trends across the social, economic and political landscape, as well as strong computer literacy and the ability to interact with diverse stakeholders at various levels. Excellent command of written and spoken English is essential to optimise the impact of editorial content, and advanced knowledge of audio-visual news production processes and systems is expected. The ideal candidate will possess strong editorial and journalistic acumen, a keen interest in television and digital news trends, and familiarity with multi-media platforms.
The core duties of the Bulletin Writer are varied and demanding. You will write, translate and edit scripts and video clips according to the SABC house style, while rigorously checking facts from multiple news sources to ensure a factual and accurate product. You will edit text and copy from field reporters and wire services, making it short and crisp for broadcast, and you will voice reports as needed. A key part of the role involves copy tasting to identify stories suitable for television news bulletins, liaising with reporters, and searching wires for breaking stories, fresh angles and updates. You will advise the Bulletin Editor on new and developing story angles, tailor stories to fit allotted time slots within the bulletin, and preview tapes to ensure correct sound levels, timing and visuals. Correcting linguistic and factual errors in scripts is also a daily responsibility, as is attending briefing and debriefing sessions with the Bulletin Editor. You will participate in brainstorming sessions with the team to discuss story ideas, angles and sources, and liaise with senior editorial team members regarding technical support and editorial requirements. All work must adhere strictly to the SABC Editorial Policies, BCCSA and Press Codes, as well as other relevant regulations and organisational policies, ensuring that stories are produced to prescribed Standard Operating Procedures.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a seasoned news professional who thrives under pressure and is passionate about public service broadcasting. The role is based within the SABC News Channel and is available on a two-position basis, reflecting the channel’s need for strong editorial talent. If you have the required qualifications, experience and a deep understanding of the news landscape, this position offers a chance to make a meaningful contribution to South Africa’s media environment.
