This vacancy is for two Boiler Operator posts within the Mpumalanga provincial administration, based at hospitals in Bohlabela (Lydenburg) and Nkangala (Witbank). The role is critical to the safe and efficient running of hospital boiler systems, which support essential services such as sterilisation, laundry, heating and hot water supply. As a Boiler Operator, the successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and monitoring of boilers, ensuring that all equipment functions within required safety and performance standards. The position sits within the institutional support services environment and works closely with maintenance and facilities teams to keep hospital operations running smoothly.
To qualify for this post, applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate and a recognised National Steam Certificate, along with practical experience as a Boiler Assistant. A sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act is essential, as is the ability to plan, organise and communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms. Because hospitals operate around the clock, candidates must be willing to work overtime and be available for standby duties when needed. These requirements are non-negotiable, as the safe operation of high-pressure steam systems depends on the competence and alertness of the operator.
The main duties of the role include ensuring the safe operation of boilers at all times, managing the correct usage and flow of chemicals within the boiler system, and constantly monitoring steam pressure as well as water and fuel levels. The operator must also ensure full compliance with occupational health standards and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, perform administrative functions related to the boiler room, and supervise the Boiler Assistant. This supervisory component means the post holder will coordinate daily tasks, maintain accurate records, and promote a strong safety culture among support staff. Attention to detail is vital, as even minor fluctuations in pressure or chemical levels can pose serious risks in a hospital environment.
Applicants should note that only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified documents, and any foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA before the interview stage. Candidates must also disclose any business interests or additional remunerative work outside their official duties. Shortlisted candidates must be available for interviews on a date determined by the department, and successful appointees will undergo personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, citizenship, financial assets, qualifications and reference verification. The successful candidate will be required to enter into an annual performance agreement and disclose financial interests annually. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only. If no feedback is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. As these are re-advertised posts, candidates who applied previously are encouraged to reapply if they remain interested.
