This position is for a BCEA Inspector based at the Labour Centre in Upington, within the Department of Employment and Labour’s provincial operations. The role is central to upholding fair labour standards in the region, with a focus on enforcing the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Sectoral Determinations, and the National Minimum Wage Act (NMWA). As an inspector, you will work independently to ensure that employers comply with these legislative frameworks, investigate reported contraventions, and take enforcement action where necessary. The work also involves proactive advocacy and education, helping both employers and workers understand their rights and obligations under the law.

To be considered for this post, candidates must hold a three-year tertiary qualification in Labour Relations, BCom Law, or an LLB degree. A valid motor vehicle driving licence is essential, as the role requires travel to various workplaces. In addition, applicants need at least two years of functional experience in inspection and enforcement services. A thorough working knowledge of departmental policies and procedures is required, along with familiarity with the Labour Relations Act, Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Unemployment Insurance Contributions Act, Employment Equity Act, and the Immigration Act. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate a range of skills including facilitation, planning and organising, leadership, computer literacy, interpersonal communication, problem-solving, interviewing, presentation, and both written and verbal communication. Being innovative and analytical is also important for identifying non-compliance and developing effective responses.

The core duties of the role are varied and demanding. You will plan and independently conduct substantive inspections to verify compliance with the BCEA, Sectoral Determinations, and the National Minimum Wage Act. This includes planning and executing investigations into reported cases of contravention, and enforcing the law as and when necessary. Beyond inspections, you will plan and conduct structured advocacy sessions on these pieces of legislation, analyse the impact of those sessions, and consolidate and compile reports on your findings. At a higher level, you will contribute to the planning, drafting, and maintenance of regional inspection plans, helping to shape the broader enforcement strategy for the area.

This is an OSD-graded position with a competitive salary, and the closing date for applications is provided in the vacancy details. The post is subject to the Department of Employment and Labour’s employment equity targets, with priority given to Coloured Males, Indian Males and Females, and White Males. If you meet the qualifications and have a passion for labour law enforcement, this role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the Upington labour market.
