This position offers an opportunity to contribute directly to South Africa’s water resource management efforts as an Assistant Technical Officer within the Department of Water and Sanitation, specifically in the National Hydrological Services directorate under the Hydrological Information sub-directorate. Based at the Pretoria Head Office, the role sits within the Water Resource Management branch, where the focus is on ensuring that accurate hydrological data is available to support decision-making, planning, and the sustainable management of the country’s water resources. The work is technical and practical, combining office-based data handling with fieldwork at hydrological gauging stations.
The ideal candidate will hold a relevant NQF Level 4 qualification that includes mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, or Physical Science, which provides the foundational technical knowledge needed for the role. A valid, unexpired driver’s licence is required, as the duties involve travelling to and performing observations at various gauging stations. Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act is essential, ensuring that all fieldwork and office activities are conducted safely. Candidates should also be computer literate, possess basic problem-solving abilities, and demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills. A willingness to acquire new skills is important, as the role offers scope for professional growth within the hydrological field.
The core duties revolve around supporting the hydrological data value chain. This includes assisting with the collection, capturing, processing, verification, and dissemination of hydrological data to clients, ensuring that information is reliable and readily available. The role also requires performing field observations at hydrological gauging stations, which involves capturing gauge plate readings for data processing purposes. In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for completing site inspection forms and drafting progress reports, contributing to the documentation and monitoring of station conditions and data quality. These tasks require attention to detail, a methodical approach, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Applicants should note that this is an entry-level technical post graded at a junior administrative and technical level. The department is an equal opportunity employer and will apply the Employment Equity imperatives of the Constitution and the Employment Equity Act when filling the vacancy. Women and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply, and preference will be given to candidates in line with the department’s equity targets. Shortlisted candidates will be subjected to suitability checks, including qualification verification through SAQA, reference checks, and criminal and credit checks. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate if shortlisted. Candidates should also be prepared to complete a financial disclosure form and undergo security clearance. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only, and if no feedback is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to fill the position.
