This position is for an Assistant Manager: Nursing (Area) at Pietersburg Hospital, operating within the Limpopo Department of Health. It is a senior nursing management role, graded as PN-A7 under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD), and involves overseeing and coordinating nursing services across the hospital’s clinical areas. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe, ethical, and quality nursing care, while also supporting the hospital’s broader strategic objectives within the public health sector. The role demands strong leadership, management acumen, and the ability to work collaboratively with both nursing staff and other health professionals.

Applicants must hold a National Senior Certificate or Matric, together with a basic R425 qualification in nursing, such as a diploma or degree that enables registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification with a duration of at least one year, accredited by the SANC, is required, along with current registration as a Professional Nurse. At least ten years of recognisable nursing experience after registration is necessary, of which six years must be gained after obtaining the one-year post-basic qualification in the relevant specialty. A further three years of the total experience must be at a management level. A valid driver’s licence is required, unless the applicant has a disability. Computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms is also essential.

The core duties include providing nursing services for in-patient and out-patient care, managing chronic care, occupational health services, infection prevention, and quality assurance. The Assistant Manager will implement the nursing plan, ensuring clinical practice meets quality standards and complies with all relevant laws and regulations. The role also involves building and maintaining constructive working relationships with nursing staff and other stakeholders, as well as efficiently utilising human, material, and physical resources. Promotion of ethics, professionalism, and patient-centred care is central to this post, in line with Batho Pele principles, the Patients’ Rights Charter, and the public service quality assurance framework.

The successful candidate must demonstrate knowledge of applicable statutes and policies governing the public service and nursing profession, including the Public Finance Management Act and Treasury Regulations. Strong communication, presentation, negotiation, research, facilitation, coordination, problem-solving, planning, and organising skills are required. The ability to interact with diverse stakeholders, including patients and health providers, is important. Candidates must be willing to work after hours, be on call, and perform shift work. Shortlisted applicants will need to submit certified copies of qualifications, SANC registration, and identification at interview stage. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA. Applications are subject to strict compliance with the Z83 application form requirements, and the post is open to suitably qualified candidates, with equity and employment targets being considered as per departmental policies.
