The Department is seeking an Assistant Director for Transport and Travel Management, based in Pretoria. This is a management-level position within the department’s support services, responsible for ensuring that official travel and fleet operations run efficiently, cost-effectively and in line with government regulations. The role sits within the broader public administration environment and requires a candidate who can coordinate multiple service providers, monitor contracts and respond to operational emergencies. The successful candidate will be expected to uphold the principles of the Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations and the National Travel Policy Framework, making sound governance a central part of the role.
To be considered, applicants must hold a three-year National Diploma or Degree in Public Management or Administration, or an equivalent qualification at NQF level 6 or 7 recognised by SAQA. In addition, at least three to five years of relevant experience is required. The department looks for strong generic competencies including planning and organising, coordination, problem solving, decision making, project management, people management, client orientation, team leadership, diversity management and effective communication. Technical expertise is equally important, with a need for in-depth knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations, transport and fleet management, contract management and the National Travel Policy Framework. Proficiency in Microsoft Office packages such as Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Excel and Outlook is also essential.
The core duties of the post involve coordinating the provision of travel services through an online booking tool, as well as coordinating fleet and transport services across the department. The Assistant Director will monitor the implementation of transport and travel contracts, ensuring that service providers meet their obligations and that the department receives value for money. Another key responsibility is monitoring fleet tracking systems and managing emergency responses, which requires vigilance, quick thinking and the ability to act decisively when vehicles are at risk or incidents occur. This is a hands-on operational role that also carries strategic oversight responsibilities.
Applicants should be aware of several important conditions. The department uses the new Z83 application form, and applications submitted on the old form will not be accepted. A comprehensive CV is required, with specific start and end dates for each position, clarity on levels and ranks, current remuneration details, and at least two contactable references. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit certified documents before interviews and will undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. The successful candidate will be subject to pre-employment screening covering criminal, credit, citizenship and qualification checks, and will be appointed on a 12-month probation period with a signed performance agreement. The department encourages persons with disabilities to apply. Correspondence is limited to shortlisted candidates, and those who do not hear within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful. The department reserves the right to make an appointment.
