The Assistant Director for Trade and Investment Promotion operates within the provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism, playing a pivotal role in shaping and implementing strategies that attract investment, boost exports, and support local industry. The post was previously advertised, and candidates who applied before are strongly encouraged to reapply, as this is a fresh opportunity to be considered.
Applicants must possess a SAQA-recognised tertiary qualification at NQF level six in Economics or Business Administration, coupled with at least three years of relevant work experience in trade and development promotion, sector development, or industry development. A valid driver’s licence is essential. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of the legal and regulatory framework governing public finance, including the Public Finance Management Act, as well as knowledge of international trade and promotion mechanisms. Practical experience in export development and training emerging businesses is required, along with the ability to interpret South African economic data and draw meaningful inferences from it. A strong grasp of both national and provincial sector dynamics is also expected, as is the capacity to engage effectively with key industry players across various sectors.
The role carries a wide range of responsibilities. The successful candidate will assist in developing and implementing export and investment promotion policies and strategies, actively promoting trade and investment opportunities. This includes leading the implementation of bilateral trade agreements and facilitating trade and commerce activities that support industry development. The position requires close liaison with all spheres of government and a broad range of stakeholders on trade and investment initiatives. Coordination of both domestic and international trade exhibitions forms part of the duties, as does providing input into awareness workshops for trade and investment sessions. The Assistant Director will also supervise assigned staff, prioritising and allocating work to ensure efficient delivery.
Candidates must demonstrate strong analytical capabilities, excellent report writing skills, and proven leadership. Programme and project management, financial management, service delivery innovation, problem solving, people management, client orientation, and advanced computer skills are all essential competencies. Honesty and integrity are non-negotiable attributes. Shortlisted applicants will be required to submit certified documents before interviews, and foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA. Candidates must disclose any directorship, shareholding, or business dealings with an organ of state, as well as any additional remunerative work. The selection process may include practical exercises, integrity assessments, and personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, financial standing, qualifications, and references. The successful candidate will enter into an annual performance agreement and must disclose financial interests annually. The department reserves the right not to fill the post, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
