The Assistant Director for System Support and Training is a key role within the Financial Governance Directorate, based in Johannesburg. This position is responsible for delivering expert system support to all Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) users of transversal systems, specifically the SAP and SRM enterprise resource planning platforms. Working in a shared services environment, the incumbent acts as a central point of guidance and oversight, ensuring that users can effectively and compliantly utilise these critical financial and procurement systems. The unit is responsible for the operational health of these systems, and this role is central to maintaining that stability across the GPG.
Candidates must possess a three-year tertiary qualification at NQF level 6 in Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics, Financial Information Systems, Finance, or Public Management. The role requires between three and five years of hands-on experience specifically in SAP ERP system support, with exposure to the FI (Financial Accounting) and MM (Materials Management) modules, alongside procurement support experience. Equally important is three to five years of experience in full-cycle project implementation. Both ERP system support and project management experience are non-negotiable for this post. A solid working knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) is required, as is a demonstrated understanding of customer relationship management in a shared services context.
The core duties span technical support, governance, capacity building, and management. The Assistant Director must provide troubleshooting and system support to all GPG SAP/SRM users, while also monitoring compliance and enforcing the legislation, policies, and guidelines that govern these transversal systems. The role includes rendering direct support and guidance to system users, and coordinating a structured capacity-building programme to upskill users across departments. Access management is another critical responsibility, with the post holder working closely with the SAP/SRM ERP and SAPAUTH teams to monitor and control user access. In addition, the role carries administrative responsibility for the entire section, which includes supervising and managing the tasks assigned to specialist super users within the SAP/SRM system support team.
This is a permanent government position with an advertised salary at the assistant director level, plus the standard public service benefits. As with many government posts, the recruitment process includes a pre-entry practical exercise and an integrity assessment for shortlisted candidates, followed by a personnel suitability check that covers vetting, criminal records, citizenship, credit history, qualifications, and employment verification. The department actively encourages applications from youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from coloured, Indian, and white population groups, in line with equity targets. A confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany applications from persons with disabilities. Applicants with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by SAQA. Please note that applications are subject to strict submission processes and timeframes, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted; those who do not receive a response within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
