This position is for an Assistant Director specialising in Injury on Duty within the Employee Wellness and Occupational Health and Safety component of the Department of Correctional Services at its National Head Office. It is an OSD-graded role and falls under the Public Service Act, meaning appointment is made within the broader public service framework. The vacancy is a re-advertisement, so candidates who submitted applications previously must submit fresh applications to be considered. The role is central to ensuring that the Department complies with the Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, collectively known as COIDA, and that all processes relating to employee injuries and occupational diseases are managed effectively from reporting through to compensation.

Applicants need a degree or diploma in Occupational Health or Hygiene, Safety Management, or an equivalent qualification, combined with three to five years of relevant experience in an occupational health and safety environment. Computer literacy and a valid driver’s licence are required, although the licence requirement is waived for applicants with disabilities. The ideal candidate must possess a strong working knowledge of COIDA, the OHS Act, the Labour Relations Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, and Public Service Regulations. Familiarity with DPSA circulars and collective agreements concerning occupational injuries and diseases is essential, as is an understanding of DCS’s own employee health and safety policies and HR mandates. The role demands skills in policy analysis, monitoring and evaluation, information collection and interpretation, technical report writing, and project management. Strong presentation, communication, listening, problem-solving, and stakeholder networking abilities are also important, along with the capacity to access and interpret management information.

The core responsibilities include managing the administration of occupational injury and disease processes within the Department as stipulated by COIDA. This involves coordinating and monitoring the implementation of relevant policies and procedures, conducting research on occupational injuries and diseases, and ensuring incidents are reported immediately, medical assistance is arranged, and compensation claims are initiated without delay. In addition, the Assistant Director will be responsible for managing performance information, human resources, finance, and assets within the component.

Candidates should note that shortlisted applicants will only need to submit certified copies of qualifications and other documents, not older than six months, on or before the interview date. The Department emphasises that applications must align with the advert’s requirements and responsibilities, and it reserves the right not to fill the post. This is a demanding but important role for someone passionate about workplace safety, employee wellbeing, and legal compliance within a large public sector environment.
