This position is for an Assistant Director of Factory Production at the Supported Employment Enterprises (SEE) Rand Factory, a unit within the Department of Employment and Labour. SEE provides protected employment and skills development opportunities for people with disabilities, and this role is central to ensuring the factory operates efficiently while meeting production targets and supporting the broader social mandate of the department. The Assistant Director will be responsible for overseeing the entire production process, ensuring that operational functions run smoothly, and maintaining a productive and compliant workplace.
To be considered, candidates must hold a three-year National Diploma at NQF level 6 in Operations Management, Production Management, or Industrial Engineering. They need at least two years of functional experience in a production or operations environment, as well as two years of supervisory experience. Experience in clothing manufacturing is an added advantage, as the Rand Factory operates within that sector. The role demands a solid understanding of relevant legislation and policies, including the Public Service Regulations, the Disability Act, the Unemployment Insurance Act, COIDA, the Employment Equity Act, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Candidates should also be familiar with departmental policies, general administrative procedures, recruitment and selection processes, and basic research methods.
Key skills required include strong planning and organising abilities, excellent communication and presentation skills, computer literacy, analytical thinking, facilitation and interpersonal skills, leadership, problem-solving, innovation, stakeholder management, and project management. The successful candidate will be expected to manage and monitor production within the factory, monitor all operational functions, develop and maintain sound relations with both internal and external clients, and manage staff and other resources effectively. This includes ensuring that production schedules are met, quality standards are upheld, and that the factory operates within the framework of applicable laws and departmental directives.
This is a demanding but rewarding role for a production professional who is committed to public service and inclusive employment. The post is based at the Rand Factory and is graded at Assistant Director level. As part of the department’s employment equity plan, priority will be given to persons with disabilities, as well as specific race and gender groups as outlined in the circular. Applicants should note that this is a full-time position, and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the strategic objectives of the Supported Employment Enterprises programme. For further details, the contact person and application procedure are provided in the original vacancy circular. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply before the closing date, ensuring that they meet all the requirements and submit the necessary documentation as specified.
