This position, located in the Head Office in Johannesburg and reporting within the Risk Management Directorate, is for an Assistant Director in Enterprise Risk Management. The role is a supervisory and implementation-focused position within the Department of Community Safety, tasked with bringing the organisation’s risk management framework to life. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that risk management is not merely a theoretical policy but an active, embedded practice across the department. This includes driving a strong risk-aware culture, supporting the strategic objectives of the department, and providing expert guidance to management and staff alike. The role is part of a two-post establishment, indicating a broader drive to strengthen internal controls and governance capabilities.

Applicants must possess a Matric certificate together with a three-year relevant National Diploma or Degree in Risk Management, Internal Auditing, or Financial Accounting, recognised at NQF level 6 or 7. This qualification must be paired with three years of relevant working experience, of which three years should also be at an administrative or supervisory level. The position demands a clean record: candidates must have no criminal record and no pending cases against them. A valid code 08 or 10 driver’s licence is also required. The ideal professional will demonstrate strong knowledge of risk management policies and frameworks, relevant legislation, and a clear understanding of the department’s strategic goals. Skills in records management, report writing, problem-solving, knowledge management, change management, business continuity, communication, negotiation, and computer literacy are essential. Personal attributes include professionalism, accessibility, a customer-focused and team-oriented approach, proactiveness, responsiveness, and a strong attention to detail underpinned by honesty and integrity.

The core duties involve supervising and implementing the organisation’s risk management framework. This encompasses participating in framework development, executing the risk management plan, and fostering a risk-aware philosophy and culture through awareness activities and capacity building. The role requires continuous monitoring of the risk environment, collecting statistical data on risk indicators, and detecting changes in both internal and external contexts. The incumbent will supervise the maintenance of risk databases and undertake analyses to identify risks, facilitate the risk assessment process, and provide advice on risk identification, analysis, evaluation, and response. A key deliverable is compiling and maintaining the risk register and risk profiles, as well as producing reports and monitoring the implementation and effectiveness of risk response activities. As a supervisor, the role also involves allocating duties, performing quality control, managing performance and conduct, and ensuring that all supervisees are adequately trained and developed to deliver a high standard of work.

The department encourages applications from youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from Coloured, Indian, and white population groups, in line with equity targets, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner is required where applicable. All shortlisted candidates will undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, which will be scored as additional interview criteria. Suitable candidates will also be subject to personnel suitability checks, including criminal, citizenship, credit, qualification, and employment verification. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment. Applications must meet all administrative requirements, including the completion of the prescribed application form and the attachment of a detailed CV, with certified qualifications requested only for shortlisted applicants. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
