This position is for an Assistant Director of Crime Prevention and Partnerships based in the Amajuba District, with the work location in Newcastle. The role sits within the provincial community safety environment, where the focus is on building and strengthening the relationship between the police and the communities they serve. Operating at a management support level, the successful candidate will be responsible for driving crime prevention initiatives across the district, working closely with community structures, civil society organisations, and various government departments. The broader context is one of civilian oversight and partnership-based policing, where the department aims to make communities active participants in safety and security rather than passive recipients of policing services.
To be considered for this post, applicants need a three-year National Diploma at NQF level 6 or higher in Social Sciences, Police Science, or a relevant equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA. This must be accompanied by at least three years of practical experience in the crime prevention and partnerships environment. A valid driver’s licence is essential, and candidates must be prepared to work extended hours when the need arises. The role demands a solid working knowledge of key legislation and frameworks, including the Constitution, the Public Service Act and Regulations, the PFMA, the Civilian Oversight Act, the SAPS Act, and the Domestic Violence Act. In addition, familiarity with crime prevention policies and project management principles is required. On the skills side, the ideal candidate will have strong communication abilities, project management expertise, report writing proficiency, computer literacy, financial management skills, and the capacity to resolve conflict effectively.
The core duties of this position revolve around promoting community police relations and supporting community safety structures. The Assistant Director will be expected to implement safety models and initiatives across the district, develop and maintain community policing forums, community safety forums, and community crime prevention partnerships and associations. A key part of the work is strengthening ties with civil society organisations to prevent and manage crime, as well as coordinating inter-departmental partnerships to address policing priorities. This is a hands-on role that requires both strategic thinking and the ability to work with diverse stakeholders at community and government levels.
There are several important conditions attached to this vacancy. Applicants must follow the prescribed application process, and those using the manual route are required to complete the new Z83 form, which must be fully filled in, signed, and initialled. A comprehensive CV must accompany the application. Only shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit certified copies of qualifications and supporting documents, and it is the applicant’s responsibility to have any foreign qualifications evaluated by SAQA. Late applications are not accepted, and failure to comply with the instructions may lead to disqualification. The department encourages applicants to make use of the designated online application centres for assistance. If no feedback is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. This is an opportunity for a skilled professional to make a meaningful contribution to community safety in the Amajuba District.
