This position offers an opportunity to serve as the Assistant Director for Administration Support within the Western Cape Mobility Department, a provincial government entity. The role is situated within a directorate that relies heavily on robust administrative systems to support its transport and mobility functions. As a Level 09 post, it carries significant managerial responsibility and requires a seasoned professional who can ensure that the directorate’s support services run smoothly, efficiently, and in full compliance with public service regulations. The successful candidate will be expected to act as a linchpin between operational staff, management, and external stakeholders, providing strategic administrative leadership while also handling day-to-day coordination of essential support functions.

To be considered for this role, applicants must hold an appropriate three-year National Diploma or a Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification. In addition, a minimum of five years of relevant experience in an administrative support environment is required. The role demands a broad and practical working knowledge of legislation, regulatory frameworks, policies, and best practices relevant to the line functions. Candidates should be well-versed in rendering finance, procurement, transport, registry, and people management or human resource support services. Familiarity with public service procedures, processes, and systems is essential, as is the ability to manage projects, implement operational management practices, and oversee procurement and tendering processes. The post also requires the capacity to develop, implement, monitor, and review policies and operational processes, and to administer the Public Service Act and its regulations, along with relevant people management policies, directives, frameworks, codes, and collective agreements. Strong numeracy and literacy skills, effective communication in both written and verbal forms, and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet or intranet systems, are all required. The ability to compile and write reports, deliver presentations, plan and organise activities and resources, and manage time effectively is also critical. Furthermore, candidates must demonstrate analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, maintain professional grooming and presentation standards, liaise effectively with customers and clients, sustain effective interpersonal relationships, and perform supervisory functions.

The core duties of the post are wide-ranging. The Assistant Director will render finance, procurement, transport, registry, and people management or human resource support services within the directorate, as well as broader administrative support services. The role also involves research and development, reporting, analysis, and record keeping, alongside managerial functions. This means the incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that administrative systems are compliant, accurate, and responsive to the needs of the directorate, while also leading and supervising support staff.

Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes interviews, vetting and supporting documentation, and two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise and one integrity assessment. The department’s employment equity targets will guide the selection process, and by applying, candidates consent to reference checks with previous employers, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a demanding but rewarding role for an experienced administrative professional seeking to contribute to public service delivery in the Western Cape.
