This position offers an opportunity to serve as an Assistant Director for Accounting Compliance within the Financial Governance component of a Gauteng Provincial Government department. Based in Johannesburg, the role sits at the heart of ensuring that provincial departments and trading entities maintain sound financial practices and adhere to the applicable accounting frameworks. As a senior functional support role, it requires a blend of technical accounting expertise, analytical rigour, and the ability to supervise and guide staff.

Candidates must possess a three-year tertiary qualification at NQF level 7, recognised by SAQA, in Financial Accounting or a BCom degree majoring in Financial Accounting. This is complemented by three to five years of proven experience within an accounting environment at an administrator functional level, specifically involving monitoring and analysing processing journals and analysing the General Ledger. Exposure to financial systems such as BAS, SAP, PERSAL, and online processing of journals on BAS is considered an advantage, as these tools are central to the day-to-day work.

The core responsibilities are wide-ranging and compliance-focused. The successful candidate will provide effective accounting compliance services to Gauteng Provincial Government departments and trading entities, engaging with both internal and external stakeholders on Trial Balance analysis, expenditure monitoring, and the review of Annual and Interim Financial Statements. The role also involves monitoring the processing of journals and performing manual interfaces, as well as monitoring the analysis of expenditure reports against approved budgets. A key task is analysing and reconciling ledger reports in line with National Treasury accounting standards for provincial departments. Additionally, the incumbent will review AFS/IFS reports to ensure they comply with applicable accounting standards, and will supervise staff within the unit.

As with many public service vacancies, there are important conditions attached to this post. The department encourages applications from youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups including coloured, Indian, and white applicants, in support of equity targets; a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany applications from persons with disabilities. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments, one practical and one integrity-based, and both will be scored as part of the interview process. Appointments are subject to personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification, and employment verification. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department reserves the right not to fill the post. This is a supervisory and analytical role suited to an accounting professional who thrives on ensuring accountability and financial correctness across a complex government environment, while also developing and leading a team.
