This position is for an Artisan Production Plumber within the Maintenance component of the Department of Community Safety, based at the East Rand District Facility Maintenance Hub. There are two posts available. The role is a production-focused trade position within a public sector maintenance environment, requiring a qualified plumber to contribute to the design, manufacture, repair and servicing of equipment and facilities in line with departmental standards and client specifications. As an artisan, the incumbent will be expected to operate as part of a maintenance team and also take on supervisory and mentoring responsibilities over junior staff.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant experience. A valid driver's licence is mandatory. The role demands a solid understanding of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental policies and procedures, legal compliance requirements, and computer-aided technical applications. The successful candidate will also need production process knowledge and a range of skills including technical report writing, problem solving and analysis, decision making, teamwork, creativity, analytical thinking, self-management, communication, computer literacy, and planning and organising. Personal attributes include being a team player, customer-focused and reliable.

The core duties involve producing designs according to client specifications within production capability limits, producing objects with materials and equipment according to job specifications and recognised standards, and rendering quality assurance on produced objects. The plumber will inspect equipment and facilities for technical faults, repair them according to standards, test repairs against specifications, and service equipment and facilities according to schedule. Quality assurance also extends to serviced and maintained equipment. The position requires compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, and maintaining job records and registers. Additionally, the incumbent will supervise and mentor staff and must keep up with new technologies and procedures for continuous individual development.

This is an OSD-graded type of public service post, with an all-inclusive remuneration package offered based on recognition of experience after the Trade Test Certificate, plus benefits; shortlisted applicants will need to provide proof of recognised experience. The department encourages youth, people with disability, coloured, Indian and white candidates to apply, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany the application where applicable. All shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments — a practical exercise and an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment — and successful candidates will be subject to personnel suitability checks including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification, and employment verification. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department reserves the right not to appoint and may use other recruitment processes, and appointment will be based on corridor coordination and departmental needs. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and applications not meeting requirements or submitted late will not be considered.
