This vacancy is for an Artisan Production: Mechanical Fitter based at the Mamelodi Facility Maintenance Hub, within the Maintenance directorate of the Department of Community Safety. The role operates in a government facility environment where the incumbent will be responsible for producing, repairing, servicing and quality-assuring mechanical objects and equipment, while also supporting the operational plan and mentoring junior staff. As a production artisan, the post requires a trade test certificate and between zero and two years of relevant experience, along with a valid driver’s licence. The successful candidate will need a sound understanding of public service legislation, departmental policies, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and legal compliance requirements, as well as knowledge of production processes and computer-aided technical applications. Key skills include technical report writing, problem solving, analytical thinking, decision making, teamwork, planning and organising, and effective communication. It is important that the applicant is a reliable, customer-focused team player who can work independently and continue developing professionally.
The core duties involve designing objects according to client specifications and within the limits of production capability, and producing those objects using appropriate materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. The artisan must also conduct quality assurance on produced items, inspect equipment and facilities for technical faults, and carry out repairs in accordance with standards. After repairs, the equipment or facilities must be tested against specifications to confirm they are working correctly. Routine servicing is done according to a schedule, and the post holder must also provide quality assurance for serviced and maintained equipment. Reporting is an important part of the role: the incumbent must compile and submit reports, contribute to the operational plan, and keep accurate job records or registers. Supervision and mentoring of staff form part of the responsibilities, as does keeping abreast of new technologies and procedures to support continuous individual development.
Several conditions apply. The salary offer is based on the recognition of experience gained after obtaining a trade test certificate, with proof of such experience required from shortlisted applicants. Shortlisted candidates will be expected to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity/ethical conduct assessment, and will also be subject to personnel suitability checks covering vetting, criminal records, citizenship, credit records, qualification verification and employment verification. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from Coloured, Indian and white backgrounds to apply, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be attached for applicants with disabilities. In line with the department’s employment equity objectives, candidate placement may be determined by corridor coordination and departmental needs. The department reserves the right not to appoint and may use alternative recruitment processes. Only shortlisted candidates will receive correspondence; if no response is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful.
