Artisan Production Grade A to C (Technical Services) (Electrical/Plumbing) (Permanent position)

This permanent Artisan Production post, graded from Grade A to Grade C, is based at Clanwilliam Hospital within the Cederberg Sub-district of the West Coast District. The successful candidate will join the Technical Services unit and play a hands-on role in maintaining health facilities across the broader Ecosystem Service platform. Although the primary trade is either electrical or plumbing, the position requires a flexible, multi-skilled approach to building maintenance, with incumbents expected to render services across institutions in the ecosystem as needed to sustain health service delivery.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in Electrical or Plumbing. Experience requirements are linked to the grade: Grade A requires no prior experience, while Grade B calls for at least 18 years of relevant, recognisable experience after obtaining the certificate, and Grade C requires at least 34 years of such experience. The role demands solid knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993, and its regulations, along with the ability to perform general building maintenance and assist in other trades such as basic carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing and general repairs within the bounds of competence and safety. Candidates must be able to read and follow written instructions, manuals and procedures, use a variety of tools effectively, and conduct fault-finding down to component level. Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, e-mail and internet use is also required.

The core duties include performing installation, maintenance, fault-finding and repairs in the relevant trade, as well as general maintenance tasks across other trades when required. The artisan will lead and coordinate the daily activities of the maintenance team by allocating tasks, monitoring progress and ensuring maintenance requests are handled effectively. Administrative responsibilities are a significant part of the role, including completing job cards, record keeping, reports, stock and tool control, asset information, requisitions and follow-ups. The post also carries financial, human resources and general administrative duties related to the maintenance function, and all work must be performed in line with Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

There are several inherent requirements. A valid Code B/EB driver's licence is essential, as is a willingness to work overtime and perform standby duties, including weekends and public holidays. The job is physically demanding, requiring fitness to handle heavy equipment and objects, and the ability to work at heights on ladders and scaffolding. A willingness to attend relevant training and skills development programmes, and to travel within the Cederberg sub-district for maintenance work, is also expected. Shortlisted candidates will undergo a practical test, and no payment of any kind is required when applying. The remuneration package includes an annual salary plus service benefits such as a 13th cheque, pension fund contributions, and housing and medical aid allowances, with the specific grade determined by experience.
