This permanent position is for an Artisan Production Grade A to C within the Technical Services department at Clanwilliam Hospital, located in the Cederberg Sub-district of the West Coast District. The role is fundamentally about ensuring that health facility infrastructure remains safe, functional, and well-maintained. As a qualified artisan, you will specialise in either electrical or plumbing work, but you will also be expected to support general maintenance across other trades, including basic carpentry, painting, and building repairs. The post forms part of the broader Ecosystem Service platform, meaning that while you are based at Clanwilliam Hospital, you may be required to render services across multiple institutions within the ecosystem as needed to sustain health service delivery. This adds variety to the work and requires flexibility and a willingness to travel within the Cederberg sub-district.
To be considered, you must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in either Electrical or Plumbing. The appointment grade depends on your experience after obtaining that certificate: Grade A requires no experience, Grade B requires at least 18 years of appropriate and recognisable experience in the trade, and Grade C requires at least 34 years of such experience. Beyond the formal qualification, you need solid practical knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993, and its regulations, along with the ability to conduct fault-finding down to component level and carry out mechanical and electrical repairs. You must be comfortable working with a variety of tools, be able to read and follow written instructions, manuals, and procedures, and have basic computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, e-mail, and internet use. An inherent requirement is a valid Code B/EB driver’s licence. You must also be physically fit to handle heavy equipment, be able to work at heights on ladders and scaffolding, and be willing to work overtime and perform standby duties, including weekends and public holidays. A willingness to attend relevant training and skills development programmes is also essential.
Your key duties will involve performing installation, maintenance, fault-finding, and repairs in your primary trade, whether electrical or plumbing, as well as assisting with general maintenance tasks in other trades where required. You will also lead and coordinate the daily activities of the maintenance team, allocating tasks, monitoring progress, and ensuring maintenance requests are attended to effectively. Administrative responsibilities are a significant part of the role, including completing job cards, record keeping, reports, stock and tool control, managing asset information, raising requisitions, and following up on maintenance requests. You must ensure all maintenance work is carried out safely and in line with Occupational Health and Safety requirements. You will also be expected to perform financial, human resources, and general administrative duties related to the maintenance function. Shortlisted candidates will be subjected to a practical test to demonstrate their skills. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post, and the position offers a competitive annual salary with service benefits such as a 13th cheque, pension fund contributions, and housing and medical aid allowances.
