This position offers an opportunity for a qualified plumber to join the maintenance team at Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory, a major healthcare facility. The role is formally designated as Artisan Production Grade A to C, reflecting a structured career progression within the public health sector. Two posts are available, and the successful candidates will be responsible for ensuring that all plumbing systems across the hospital campus remain functional, safe, and compliant with relevant regulations. This is a hands-on technical role that also carries supervisory and administrative responsibilities, making it suitable for individuals who are not only skilled in their trade but also capable of coordinating work and supporting broader team objectives.
To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in plumbing. The level at which a candidate is appointed depends on their post-qualification experience. Those entering at Grade A do not require any prior experience, while Grade B requires at least 18 years of relevant and recognisable experience in the plumbing field after obtaining the trade test. For Grade C, a minimum of 34 years of such experience is required. In addition to technical qualifications, the role demands a valid driver’s licence, as travel may be necessary for duties. Candidates must also be prepared to perform standby duties and work overtime when required, including responding to emergency breakdowns outside normal working hours. Computer literacy is essential, as is the willingness to learn and comply with the hospital’s in-house systems and procedures. A working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993, and its regulations is also required to ensure that all work is carried out safely and legally.
The core duties involve the repair, installation, and maintenance of plumbing systems throughout the facility. This includes attending to leaks, blockages, and faulty fixtures, as well as installing new pipework and equipment where needed. Beyond the hands-on work, the artisan will be expected to supervise the work schedule for the division, assist in supervising and training staff, and take responsibility for the necessary administrative functions of the workshop. This includes exercising control over tools and materials, ensuring that stock levels are adequate, and maintaining accurate records. The artisan will also render assistance to the Artisan Foreman across all functions of the division, including administrative tasks, and will provide feedback to the supervisor on service and maintenance issues. When the Artisan Foreman is off duty, the artisan will stand in and take charge as required.
This is a permanent post within a well-established public health institution, offering a stable working environment and the chance to contribute to the smooth operation of a vital hospital. The grading structure allows for professional growth based on experience. It is important to note that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this position. Interested candidates should ensure they meet the experience and licensing requirements before applying, and they should be prepared for a role that combines technical skill with supervisory responsibility and a commitment to safety and service excellence.
