ARTISAN PRODUCTION GRADE A TO C (PLUMBING) Overberg District

This is an Artisan Production Grade A to C (Plumbing) vacancy based at Caledon Hospital in the Theewaterskloof Sub-district, Overberg District, within the Western Cape health ecosystem. The post is an OSD-graded position, meaning entry-level candidates can apply at Grade A, while experienced artisans may qualify for Grade B or C depending on the number of years of recognised post-trade experience they hold. This is a hands-on but also supervisory and administrative role, responsible for keeping hospital and related health facilities safe, functional and compliant with maintenance standards.

The minimum educational requirement is an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in Plumbing. For Grade A, no prior experience is needed after obtaining the certificate. Grade B requires at least 18 years of relevant experience, and Grade C requires at least 34 years of relevant experience in the plumbing field post-certification. Applicants must also have a valid driver’s licence (Code B/EB/C1), as travel between facilities may be required. A clear willingness to work overtime and perform standby duties after hours, on weekends and on public holidays is essential. The ideal candidate will understand the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and its regulations, be computer literate in MS Word, Excel and Outlook, and possess strong supervisory, administrative and teamwork skills.

The duties are wide-ranging. The successful candidate will manage the workshop and all its functions, carry out repairs, maintenance and new installations across different facilities, and help manage emergencies according to the emergency maintenance protocol. The role also involves compiling minor specifications, attending site meetings, and overseeing the work of outsourced contractors. Administrative responsibilities include compiling reports, maintaining registers, assisting with workshop budget control, and ordering and controlling tools, equipment and materials. In addition, the artisan will supervise and manage staff performance, apply the disciplinary code when necessary, and provide support to managers, supervisors and colleagues.
