Artisan Production Grade A to C (Mechanical) (Permanent position)

An exciting permanent employment opportunity exists for a qualified mechanical artisan to join the technical team at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Rondebosch, Western Cape. The position, Artisan Production Grade A to C (Mechanical), is part of the provincial health department’s artisan production occupational-specific dispensation. The successful candidate will be accountable to the Artisan Foreman and will play a vital role in ensuring that all hospital plant and engineering equipment remains in good working order, supporting an environment where safety and reliability are non-negotiable.

Candidates must be in possession of an appropriate Trade Test Certificate. The vacancy is structured across three grades, with entry at Grade A open to those who have just completed their trade and do not yet have any post-qualification experience. Grade B and Grade C are reserved for artisans with a long and verifiable track record of appropriate mechanical experience after obtaining the trade test certificate, with defined minimum service periods set out in the vacancy. The role demands a proactive person who can work independently and under pressure, while also functioning effectively as a team member. Strong planning skills, a willingness to learn and comply with in-house systems, and a thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and its relevant regulations are essential. The environment is physically demanding: the incumbent must be able to climb over and under obstacles, ascend ladders, work at heights, and operate tools and equipment skilfully and safely.

In terms of duties, the artisan is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all plant and equipment at the hospital under the supervision of the Artisan Foreman. This includes performing necessary administrative functions, training and supervising subordinates, helping to execute engineering projects, and exercising control over tools and materials. The mechanical work covers general repairs and basic general welding, and successful performance relies on practical knowledge of air conditioning equipment and medical gas plants, which are critical in a hospital setting. The artisan may also be required to assist the Artisan Foreman with any other duties and, when emergencies arise, to provide support at other institutions within the Metro. A valid Code B/EB driver’s licence and a willingness to travel across the Metro when operational needs require it are therefore inherent requirements of the job.
