ARTISAN PRODUCTION GRADE A TO C (CARPENTRY)

This position offers an opportunity for a qualified carpenter to join the technical services team at Tygerberg Hospital in Parow Valley, working within a large public healthcare environment. As an Artisan Production Grade A to C specialising in carpentry, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the hospital’s buildings, plant infrastructure, equipment and associated fixtures are maintained, repaired and upgraded to a safe and functional standard. The role is graded across three production levels, meaning entry-level candidates as well as those with substantial post-trade experience can apply, with the specific grade determined by the number of years of recognised experience held after obtaining the relevant trade test certificate.

To be considered, applicants must possess an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in Carpentry. For appointment at Grade A, no prior experience is required, making this an excellent entry point for newly qualified artisans. Grade B requires at least 18 years of appropriate and recognisable experience in the carpentry field after certification, while Grade C requires at least 34 years of such experience. In addition to the trade qualification, candidates must hold a valid driver’s licence and be willing to work after hours and perform standby duties, as hospital emergencies and urgent repairs can arise at any time. Strong communication skills, computer literacy, and a working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and its relevant regulations are also essential competencies for this post.

The duties attached to this role are broad and go beyond hands-on carpentry work. The artisan will be expected to perform maintenance and repairs to plant, hospital services and equipment, as well as plan and design new installations and alterations. This includes attending to emergencies and standby call-outs and providing technical advice to colleagues and other departments. The role also carries supervisory and administrative responsibilities, such as supervising, training and developing junior staff, compiling staff evaluation reports, and assisting with other human resource-related duties. Financial and procurement functions form part of the job too, including assisting with departmental budgeting, controlling procurement expenditure, compiling specifications, assisting with tender processes, and ensuring compliance with stores regulations. The incumbent will also help maintain a database of servicing and inspection records for all plant, equipment and machinery, and will determine the best utilisation of materials and requisition supplies accordingly.

This is a permanent post within the Western Cape Government’s health infrastructure framework, and the position is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for artisan production grades.
