This position offers an opportunity for a qualified artisan to join the technical team at Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory, working specifically within the air-conditioning and refrigeration trade. The role is structured as an Artisan Production post with three possible grades, allowing candidates with different levels of experience to apply. The successful incumbents will be responsible for ensuring that the hospital’s climate control and refrigeration systems remain fully operational, which is critical in a healthcare environment where temperature-sensitive equipment, medication storage, and patient comfort depend on reliable mechanical services. The work is based at one of South Africa’s largest and busiest hospitals, meaning the role carries significant responsibility and requires a professional, safety-conscious approach.

Applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in the air-conditioning or refrigeration field. The entry-level Grade A post requires no prior experience, making this an excellent opportunity for newly qualified artisans. For Grade B, at least 18 years of relevant, recognised experience after obtaining the trade test is required, while Grade C demands a minimum of 34 years of such experience. In addition to the trade qualification, candidates must possess a valid Code B or EB driver’s licence, as travel may be necessary for duties. The job also requires the ability to perform after-hours repairs and participate in standby duties, so flexibility and reliability are essential. Key competencies include welding skills, good verbal and written communication, a basic understanding of refrigeration control circuits, and familiarity with the requirements of the Machinery and Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993).

The core duties involve the repair and maintenance of a wide range of air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. This includes screw chillers, refrigerators, air ducts, coils, various refrigeration compressors, heat pumps, VRV air-conditioning systems, Daikin chillers, HEPA filters, and reciprocating plants. Incumbents will also inspect equipment and installations to identify faults and ensure compliance with safety standards. Beyond hands-on technical work, the role includes assisting the Artisan Foreman with administration, planning, and scheduling, as well as controlling tools and materials. Training and developing staff is another important responsibility, meaning the post holder should be able to share knowledge and guide less experienced colleagues. All work must be carried out in line with in-house systems and procedures, and the artisan must be willing to learn and adapt to these protocols.

This is a permanent, OSD-graded post within the provincial government’s health infrastructure framework. Two posts are available, and the hospital is an equal-opportunity employer, with equity targets likely to apply. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this position, and applicants should be wary of any requests for money. For further details, the named contact person can be approached during office hours. The closing date is provided in the circular, and interested candidates are encouraged to prepare their applications well in advance, ensuring that all required documentation, including proof of qualifications and experience, is submitted correctly. This role is ideal for a dedicated artisan who thrives in a demanding institutional environment and wants to contribute to the smooth functioning of a major public hospital.
