This position is for an Artisan Production Grade A: Roll Collator within the Security Printing directorate of the Government Printing Works, based in Pretoria. There are two posts available, and the role is graded under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) remuneration structure. The successful incumbents will work in a high-security printing environment, where the production of security-printed documents demands strict adherence to specifications, quality standards, and confidentiality. The role is essentially an entry-level artisan position within the finishing section of the printing operation, focusing on the operation of specialised binding and finishing machinery.

Candidates must hold a Grade 10 certificate or an equivalent qualification, together with a completed apprenticeship and a Trade Test Certificate in Mechanized Bookbinding. A Grade 12 qualification will be an added advantage, as will any prior experience in the printing industry, although no formal work experience is required for appointment. Importantly, the successful applicant must be able to obtain a positive security clearance, given the sensitive nature of the materials processed. A valid driver’s licence is also listed as an added advantage. This is a production-oriented role that requires technical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work accurately under pressure to meet output targets.

The core duties involve operating the Roll-Collator, Guillotine, and other finishing equipment, ensuring that these machines run efficiently and continuously. The artisan will be responsible for performing routine maintenance on the equipment and for coordinating repairs or technical support with maintenance personnel when necessary. Quality assurance and control are central to the role: the incumbent must check that finished print products meet the required standards and specifications, and process security-printed products in line with both production specifications and customer requirements. Meeting production targets is essential, and all work must be completed on time in accordance with GPW standards. The role also includes cleaning and maintaining machines according to a set schedule, participating in safety, health, environment, risk, and quality (SHERQ) initiatives, and complying with all Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requirements. The artisan must actively monitor and mitigate safety risks in the workplace. In addition, accurate daily production timesheets must be completed and submitted on time.

Applicants should note that this is an equal opportunity affirmative action position, and the department has a clear intention to promote equity in terms of race, gender, and disability through these appointments. Suitable candidates will be subjected to personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification, and employment verification. By applying, candidates consent to the collection, processing, and storage of personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of qualifications and other relevant documents before the interview. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If no feedback is received within eight weeks after the closing date, applicants should consider their applications unsuccessful. The successful candidate will be required to enter into an employment contract and a performance agreement.
