This position is for a qualified Painter working as an Artisan Production Grade A within the Bohlabela District at Arconhoeck, under the Mpumalanga provincial government. The role forms part of the government’s artisan production workforce, where skilled trade workers are deployed to maintain, repair and ensure the quality of physical infrastructure and assets. As an OSD-graded post, the job carries a structured career path and salary progression typical of government artisan positions. The successful candidate will be expected to function as a hands-on production artisan, contributing directly to the department’s operational objectives through skilled painting work and related trade duties.
To be considered, applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate, an appropriate Trade Test certificate, and have prior experience working as a Tradesman Aid. This combination of formal schooling, trade certification and practical experience is essential, as the role requires both theoretical knowledge and proven on-the-job competence. Candidates must also be prepared to work overtime and be available for standby duties, as the department’s maintenance and repair needs may arise outside normal working hours. The ability to perform under pressure is a key requirement, along with a range of technical and behavioural competencies. These include technical analysis knowledge, familiarity with computer-aided technical applications, understanding of legal compliance requirements, and the ability to produce technical reports. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills are needed, as is the capacity to plan and organise work effectively. Good listening and communication skills, together with sound interpersonal relations, are also important for working within a team and liaising with supervisors, colleagues and stakeholders.
The core duties of the role involve executing artisan production work, which means carrying out painting tasks to a professional standard across various sites and facilities. Beyond the actual painting, the position requires performing repairs, conducting inspections to assess the condition of surfaces and structures, and ensuring that all work meets quality assurance standards. Legal compliance is another critical responsibility, meaning the artisan must work in line with relevant regulations, safety standards and departmental policies. Reporting is also part of the job, with the incumbent expected to document work completed, inspections undertaken and any issues identified. This ensures accountability and supports the department’s broader maintenance and infrastructure management functions.
Shortlisted candidates should note that they will be required to submit certified copies of their documents on or before the interview date. Applicants with foreign qualifications must have these evaluated by SAQA and provide proof of the evaluation when shortlisted. Candidates must also disclose any business interests or additional remunerative work outside their normal duties, as part of the department’s integrity requirements. The successful appointee will be expected to enter into an Annual Performance Agreement and disclose financial interests annually. The department reserves the right not to fill the post, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If no feedback is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful.
