This position is for an Artisan Production Grade A within the Examination Digital Printing Line, based in Pretoria and operating under the Security Printing directorate of the Government Printing Works. The role is an OSD-graded post, reflecting a structured career path for qualified artisans. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating digital printing equipment that handles both online and offline finishing processes, ensuring that production runs smoothly, efficiently, and in line with strict government printing standards. This is a hands-on technical role within a high-security environment, where attention to detail, quality control, and adherence to safety protocols are essential.
To be considered, applicants must have a Grade 10 certificate and, crucially, the completion of an appropriate printing apprenticeship in the printing industry, with a special focus on special products printing and finishing. A Trade Test certificate in the printing industry is also a mandatory requirement. While not essential, a Grade 12 qualification and computer literacy will be advantageous, as will holding a valid driver’s licence. Because this role sits within a security-focused government department, the ability to obtain a positive security clearance is a firm requirement, and candidates should be prepared for thorough vetting.
The core duties revolve around the end-to-end printing process. This includes organising, planning, and allocating raw materials and other resources according to the specific product being printed, as well as achieving production targets while ensuring that all printing is completed on time and meets both GPW standards and customer expectations. The artisan will print customer orders according to precise specifications and must continuously perform quality control using existing standard operating procedures. This involves checking text, images, and colour correctness throughout the printing process. The role also requires resolving basic technical and mechanical challenges to minimise downtime, assisting with problem-solving as needed, and maintaining and cleaning machines and equipment according to a set schedule to ensure efficient and continuous operation. General housekeeping in the working environment is also part of the daily routine.
Beyond the immediate production tasks, the incumbent will participate in safety, health, environment, risk, and quality (SHERQ) initiatives and must ensure compliance with all OHSA safety requirements. The role also includes providing input on policies and procedures and assisting with supervisory functions when required. This is a position that demands both technical skill and a responsible, safety-conscious attitude. The department is an equal opportunity affirmative action employer and specifically aims to promote equity in terms of race, gender, and disability through filling this post. Suitable candidates will be subject to a personnel suitability check, including criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification, and employment verification. By applying, candidates consent to the processing of their personal information in line with POPIA. The successful appointee will be required to enter into an employment contract and a performance agreement.
