This position is for an Artisan Production Grade A specialising in electrical work, based at the Nkangala District in Victor Khanye within the Mpumalanga provincial government. The role is an OSD-graded artisan post, meaning it falls within the Occupation Specific Dispensation applicable to technical trade positions in the public service. The incumbent will operate as a qualified electrician within a district-level team, responsible for delivering hands-on artisan services that support the department’s infrastructure and maintenance functions. The work is practical and trade-focused, requiring a strong understanding of electrical systems, safety protocols, and public service regulations. Given the nature of the role, the successful candidate must be prepared to work overtime and be available for standby duties when required, ensuring that essential electrical services remain operational outside of normal working hours.
To be considered for this role, applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate as well as a recognised Trade Test certificate in the electrical trade. In addition, relevant experience working as a Tradesman Aid is required, providing a solid foundation in the practical aspects of the trade before advancing to production artisan level. The department is looking for individuals who possess sound knowledge of legislative prescripts governing the Public Service, occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements, quality control principles, and proper record-keeping practices. Computer literacy is essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. These competencies are necessary to ensure that all work is carried out safely, compliantly, and in line with departmental standards.
The core duties of the role involve executing artisan production work, which includes performing electrical repairs, conducting routine inspections, and carrying out quality assurance checks on completed work. The artisan must also ensure legal compliance with all relevant regulations and standards, and is responsible for compiling accurate reports on work undertaken. This means the role is not purely manual; it also requires administrative discipline, attention to detail, and the ability to document activities clearly. The work contributes directly to the maintenance and reliability of electrical infrastructure within the district, supporting broader government service delivery.
There are several important conditions attached to this vacancy. Applications must be submitted through the provincial e-recruitment portal, and no manual, emailed, or faxed applications will be accepted. Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of their documents, and those with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by SAQA and provide proof of the evaluation when requested. Applicants must also disclose any business interests or remunerative work outside their official duties, and must confirm that they are not directors or shareholders of companies conducting business with the state. Shortlisted candidates should be available for interviews at a date, time, and place determined by the department. The selection process may include practical exercises, integrity assessments, and personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, financial standing, qualifications, and references. The successful candidate will be required to enter into an annual performance agreement and disclose their financial interests annually. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If no feedback is received within three months after the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful.
