This position is for a qualified plumber within the Maintenance directorate of the Department of Community Safety, based at the Tulisa Park District Maintenance Hub’s Building Services section. As an Artisan Production Grade A-C, the incumbent will be part of a team responsible for keeping government buildings and facilities in a safe, functional and well-maintained condition. The role is OSD-graded, and the offer will be determined by the recognised experience the candidate holds after obtaining a trade test certificate, so proof of that experience will be requested from shortlisted applicants.

To be considered, candidates must possess an appropriate Trade Test Certificate, a minimum of zero to two years of relevant experience, and a valid driver’s licence. The department looks for individuals with a sound working knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental policies and procedures, legal compliance, and computer-aided technical applications. Key skills include technical report writing, problem solving and analysis, decision making, teamwork, creativity, analytical thinking, self-management, communication and computer literacy, as well as planning and organising. The ideal candidate is a reliable, customer-focused team player.

The plumber’s duties are broad and hands-on. They include producing designs according to client specifications and within production capability, and fabricating objects using materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. The role requires quality assurance of produced objects, inspecting equipment and facilities for technical faults, repairing and testing equipment or facilities against specifications, and servicing them according to schedule. After servicing, the incumbent must also render quality assurance of the maintained equipment. Administrative responsibilities include compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, keeping and maintaining job records or registers, and supervising and mentoring junior staff. The role also expects continuous professional development by keeping up with new technologies and procedures.

There are several important conditions attached to this vacancy. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, coloured, Indian and white applicants to apply, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be attached if applicable. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, both of which are scored and used as additional criteria during the interview process. A full personnel suitability check will also be conducted, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification and employment verification. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. The application process requires the fully completed and signed prescribed form, along with a comprehensive CV; certified copies are only needed for shortlisted candidates, and any failure to comply or late submissions will result in disqualification. Correspondence is limited to shortlisted candidates, and if no response is received within three months, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. The department also reserves the right not to make an appointment and may utilise alternative recruitment processes, with placement depending on corridor coordination and departmental needs.
