This advertised post is for a Production Grade A-C Artisan Plumber, with two vacancies, based at the Charlotte Maxeke Facility Maintenance Hub under the Maintenance directorate. The role operates in a public-sector maintenance environment where the plumber will contribute to the production, repair and servicing of plumbing infrastructure and associated equipment. The incumbent will be expected to work within the boundaries of client specifications, departmental policies, legal compliance requirements and recognised technical standards, while also applying the principles of the Occupational Health and Safety Act in all day-to-day activities.

Applicants must be in possession of an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in plumbing, have a valid driver's licence, and should ideally have between zero and two years of post-trade work experience. The department values a broad range of competencies, including knowledge of public service legislation, departmental strategies, computer-aided technical applications, production processes and legal compliance. The successful candidate will also need strong technical report writing skills, problem-solving and analytical capabilities, decision-making, creativity, self-management, teamwork, communication and computer proficiency, as well as planning and organising abilities. Reliability, customer focus and a team-player attitude are essential personal attributes.

Key duties will include producing designs and objects according to specifications, rendering quality assurance over all outputs, inspecting facilities and equipment for faults, performing repairs, testing repaired items against specifications, and servicing equipment according to planned schedules. The plumber must also compile and submit technical reports, feed inputs into the operational plan, keep accurate job records and registers, and supervise or mentor more junior staff. Continuous professional development is encouraged, with the expectation that the artisan remains current with new technologies and procedures relevant to the trade.

This is an OSD-graded artisan position, with salary determined in line with the production grade and recognition of experience after the trade test certificate; shortlisted candidates will need to provide proof of that recognised experience. Shortlisted applicants will also participate in pre-entry assessments consisting of a practical exercise and an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment, with the results used as additional selection criteria during interviews. A thorough personnel suitability check will be conducted, covering criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification and employment history. The department is an equal-opportunity employer and specifically encourages youth, people with disabilities, and Coloured, Indian and White applicants to apply; those with disabilities must submit a registered medical practitioner's confirmation of disability. Successful candidates will be placed according to corridor coordination and departmental needs. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment or to use alternative recruitment processes. Because of the large number of applications anticipated, no acknowledgement will be sent; only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and anyone who does not hear from the department within three months should assume their application was unsuccessful.
