This is a two-post vacancy for an Artisan Production Grade A-C Plumber at the Sebokeng Facility Maintenance Hub, within the Maintenance directorate of the Department of Community Safety. The role is an OSD-graded artisan position that requires a qualified plumber to provide both reactive and planned maintenance services across departmental facilities. The successful candidates will be responsible for producing, repairing, servicing and quality-assuring plumbing-related objects and installations, working to client specifications and recognised standards within the limits of the production capability of the workshop.
Applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant post-trade experience, with the offered salary level determined by recognition of that experience. A valid driver’s licence is required. Candidates need a sound working knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental strategies and procedures, legal compliance requirements, and computer-aided technical applications. They must also demonstrate production process knowledge and skills. Key skills include technical report writing, problem solving and analysis, decision making, teamwork, creativity, analytical thinking, self-management, communication and computer literacy, and planning and organising. The department is looking for attributes such as being a team player, customer-focused and reliable.
The main duties cover the full plumbing maintenance cycle. This includes producing designs according to client specifications, manufacturing objects with suitable materials and equipment, and carrying out quality assurance on produced objects. The plumber will inspect equipment and facilities for technical faults, repair them according to standards, and test repaired or serviced equipment against specifications. Scheduled servicing of equipment and facilities must be undertaken, with quality assurance applied to all serviced and maintained items. Administrative responsibilities include compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, and keeping and maintaining a job record or register. In addition, the post requires supervision and mentoring of staff, as well as keeping up with new technologies and procedures for continuous individual development.
The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups including coloured, Indian and white applicants to apply; a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be attached where applicable. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments, one practical exercise and one integrity or ethical conduct assessment, and selection panels will score these as an additional criterion at interview. Suitable candidates will also be subject to personnel suitability checks such as vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification and employment verification. Applicants with foreign qualifications must have a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department reserves the right not to appoint and notes that placement will be according to corridor coordination and departmental needs. As the department does not accept posted, emailed or hand-delivered applications, prospective applicants must follow the official application channel indicated in the circular, and ensure the prescribed Z83 form and a comprehensive CV are fully completed and submitted before the closing date; only shortlisted candidates will be asked for certified copies of qualifications. If no response is received within three months, the application should be considered unsuccessful.
