This position offers an opportunity for a qualified plumber to join the Maintenance Directorate within the Department of Community Safety, based at the Kopanong Facility Maintenance Hub. As an Artisan Production Grade A to C, the successful candidate will be responsible for the full spectrum of plumbing-related maintenance and production functions that keep departmental facilities operational and safe. The role is graded within the artisan production scale, and the final level of appointment within that grade will be determined based on the recognition of experience gained after obtaining a trade test certificate, with proof of such experience required from shortlisted applicants.
Applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is essential. The department is looking for someone with a solid working knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and departmental strategies and procedures. Familiarity with computer-aided technical applications, legal compliance requirements, and production processes is also expected. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical report writing, problem-solving, analytical, decision-making, teamwork, creativity, self-management, communication, computer literacy, and planning and organisational skills. Personal attributes should include being a team player, customer-focused, and reliable.
The core duties involve producing designs and objects according to client specifications and recognised standards, within the limits of production capability. The incumbent will render quality assurance on produced items, inspect facilities and equipment for technical faults, and carry out repairs and testing according to specifications. Scheduled servicing and maintenance of equipment and facilities form a key part of the role, along with quality assurance on all serviced assets. The plumber will also compile and submit reports, provide inputs to the operational plan, maintain job records or registers, and supervise and mentor junior staff. A commitment to continuous professional development is required, with the expectation that the artisan keeps abreast of new technologies and procedures.
The application process carries several important conditions. The prescribed new Z83 application form must be fully completed, with all relevant sections answered, and a recently updated comprehensive CV must be attached. Only shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit certified copies of qualifications, and foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. All shortlisted applicants will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments, namely a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, which will be scored as an additional criterion during interviews. Suitable candidates will also be subject to personnel suitability checks, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification and employment verification. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups, including coloured, Indian and white applicants, to apply, with a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner required where applicable. Since applications are not acknowledged, candidates who do not receive a response within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
