This vacancy is for an Artisan Production Grade A-C Plumber based at the Sterkfontein Facility Maintenance Hub, functioning within the Maintenance directorate of the Department of Community Safety. The role is a hands-on technical position focused on the upkeep, repair and servicing of the department’s physical infrastructure and equipment. As a production-grade artisan, the successful candidate will be expected to work both independently and as part of a maintenance team, ensuring that all plumbing-related work meets recognised standards and legal requirements, particularly those set out in the OHS Act and departmental policies.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is essential. The role also requires a solid working knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, as well as departmental strategies and procedures. Familiarity with legal compliance and computer-aided technical applications is expected. The department is looking for someone with strong technical report writing, problem-solving, analytical and decision-making skills, alongside sound planning, organising and communication abilities. Personal attributes such as reliability, a customer-focused approach and the ability to work well in a team are also important.

The core duties of the post are wide-ranging. The plumber will produce designs according to client specifications and within the limits of production capability, then manufacture objects using the appropriate materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. Quality assurance forms a key part of the role, both for newly produced objects and for equipment and facilities that have been serviced or repaired. The incumbent will inspect facilities for technical faults, carry out repairs to the required standards, test repaired or serviced equipment against specifications, and perform scheduled servicing of equipment and facilities. Administrative responsibilities include compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, and maintaining job records or registers. In addition, the role involves supervising and mentoring junior staff, as well as keeping abreast of new technologies and procedures to support continuous professional development.

This is a government position with specific application conditions. Interested candidates must complete the new Z83 application form, ensuring all fields in Parts A to D are filled in, and Parts E to G may refer to an attached comprehensive CV, provided the CV contains the required information. Shortlisted applicants will need to submit certified copies of qualifications and undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity test. A personnel suitability check, covering criminal records, citizenship, credit and qualification verification, will also be conducted. The department encourages applications from youth, people with disabilities, and candidates of coloured, Indian and white descent, in line with its equity targets. Applicants with foreign qualifications must include a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department will not consider late, posted, emailed or hand-delivered applications, and if no response is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful.
