This is a skilled plumbing position within the Maintenance directorate at the South Rand Facility Maintenance Hub, offering an opportunity to work as an Artisan Production Grade A-C plumber in the public service. The role centres on delivering high-quality plumbing services across departmental facilities, from initial design and production through to repair, servicing and quality assurance. The successful candidate will be expected to produce designs that meet client specifications and work within production capability, then manufacture objects using the appropriate materials and equipment in accordance with job specifications and recognised standards. A significant part of the work involves inspecting equipment and facilities for technical faults, repairing them to standard, testing repaired items against specifications, and servicing equipment on a scheduled basis. The post also carries quality assurance responsibilities, ensuring that all produced, serviced and maintained equipment and facilities are checked and confirmed to meet the required standards. In addition to hands-on technical work, the plumber must compile and submit reports, provide inputs to the operational plan, keep and maintain job records or registers, and supervise or mentor more junior staff. Keeping abreast of new technologies and procedures is an expected part of continuing professional development in this role.
To be considered, candidates need an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and between zero and two years of relevant experience, as well as a valid driver's licence. Knowledge areas include Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental policies and strategies, computer-aided technical applications, and legal compliance. The required skills span technical report writing, problem solving and analysis, decision making, teamwork, creativity, analytical thinking, self-management, communication, computer literacy, and planning and organising. The department is looking for someone who is a team player, customer-focused and reliable, and who can apply these qualities in a maintenance environment.
This is a graded position within the artisan production scale, with remuneration based on years of post-trade-certificate experience and including the standard public service benefits. The appointment process includes a number of special conditions. Shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise and one integrity or ethical conduct assessment, with the practical exercise scored as part of the interview process. A personnel suitability check will also be conducted, covering vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification and employment verification. Candidates with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. The department actively encourages youth, people with disabilities, and coloured, Indian and white applicants to apply, and individuals with disabilities are required to attach a confirmation from a registered medical practitioner. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and placement of the successful candidate will be determined by corridor coordination and departmental needs. Due to the anticipated volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and those who have not received a response within three months of the closing date should regard their application as unsuccessful.
