This vacancy is for an Artisan Production Grade A-C Painter within the Facilities Maintenance Services directorate, specifically the Routine Maintenance sub-directorate, based at the Smangaliso Mkhatshwa centre. The role is an OSD-graded position within the public service, meaning the salary offer is determined by recognised experience after the trade test, with a benefits package attached. The core purpose of the position is to support the department’s routine maintenance functions by producing quality painted surfaces, repairing and servicing facilities and equipment, and ensuring that all work meets recognised standards and client specifications.
To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant post-trade experience. A valid driver’s licence is also required. The department is looking for someone with sound knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and departmental strategies and procedures. Familiarity with legal compliance, computer-aided technical applications, and production processes is essential. The successful candidate will need strong technical report writing, problem-solving, decision-making, analytical, communication, and computer skills, along with planning and organising abilities. Personal attributes such as being a team player, customer-focused, reliable, creative, and capable of self-management are important. The role also calls for the ability to supervise and mentor staff, so leadership potential is valued.
The main duties involve producing designs according to client specifications and within production capability, then creating objects using the appropriate materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. The artisan must render quality assurance on produced objects, inspect equipment and facilities for technical faults, and carry out repairs according to standards. After repair, the equipment must be tested against specifications, and servicing must be done according to schedule. The role also requires rendering quality assurance on serviced and maintained equipment, compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, and keeping an accurate job record or register. Continuous development is expected, so the incumbent should keep up with new technologies and procedures.
There are several important conditions attached to this post. Applications must be submitted using the new Z83 form, with all relevant sections completed and the declaration signed, accompanied by a comprehensive CV. Only shortlisted candidates will need to submit certified copies of qualifications. Foreign qualifications must come with a SAQA evaluation certificate. Shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments, one practical and one integrity-based, and may also be subject to personnel suitability checks including criminal record, citizenship, credit, qualification and employment verification. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from coloured, Indian and white population groups to apply, with a confirmation of disability required from a registered medical practitioner where applicable. The department reserves the right not to appoint and may use other recruitment processes. Placement will depend on corridor coordination and departmental needs. Correspondence is limited to shortlisted candidates, and those not contacted within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
