This vacancy is for an Artisan Production Grade A-C specialising in Electrical work, based at the Sizwe District Facility Maintenance Hub within the Maintenance directorate of the Department of Community Safety. The role sits within a public service context and is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for artisan production posts, meaning the offer is made in line with recognised experience post-trade-test certification. As an artisan, you will be responsible for the full cycle of technical maintenance work: interpreting client specifications to produce designs, manufacturing objects using appropriate materials and equipment to recognised standards, and ensuring quality assurance on all outputs. You will also inspect facilities and equipment to identify technical faults, carry out repairs according to set standards, test repaired or serviced equipment against specifications, and perform scheduled servicing of equipment and facilities. Importantly, you will render quality assurance on serviced and maintained infrastructure, compile and submit technical reports, provide input into the operational plan, and maintain job records and registers. The role also carries supervisory responsibilities, including mentoring and overseeing staff, and you are expected to keep abreast of new technologies and procedures for continuous professional development.

To be considered, you need an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and a minimum of zero to two years of relevant experience, which may be fresh from trade test or with limited exposure. A valid driver’s licence is required. The department looks for sound knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental strategies and procedures, legal compliance, and computer-aided technical applications. On the skills side, you should be proficient in technical report writing, problem solving and analysis, decision making, teamwork, creativity, analytical thinking, self-management, communication, computer literacy, and planning and organising. Personal attributes expected include being a team player, customer-focused, and reliable.

Regarding the application process, applicants must complete the new Z83 form fully, including all fields in Parts A to D, and answer the questions in Part F about conditions that prevent re-appointment; Part E to G can refer to an attached comprehensive CV, provided the CV contains the required information. Only shortlisted candidates will need to submit certified copies of qualifications, and foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. All shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise and one integrity (ethical conduct) assessment, both scored as additional criteria during interviews. A personnel suitability check will also be conducted, covering vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification and employment verification. The department encourages youth, people with disability, and candidates from coloured, Indian and white population groups to apply, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany applications from persons with disabilities. Please note that only shortlisted applicants will be contacted; if you do not hear back within three months of the closing date, your application was unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to appoint and may utilise other recruitment processes, and successful candidates will be placed according to corridor coordination and departmental needs.
