This position offers an opportunity for a qualified electrician to join the Department of Water and Sanitation as an Artisan Production Grade A to C, with three posts available at Jericho Dam on the Usutu River. Working within the context of water infrastructure management, the role is critical to ensuring the continuous and safe operation of electrical systems across a range of departmental assets. The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical installations in dams, reservoirs, departmental houses, pump stations, machinery, repeater stations, dam walls, and pipelines. This is a hands-on, technical role that requires both practical skill and a strong understanding of safety and compliance standards. The position is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD), reflecting a structured career path for artisans within the public service.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Electrical Trade Test Certificate, which is the essential qualification. While not mandatory, prior experience in electrical maintenance will be viewed as an added advantage, as will a valid unexpired driver’s licence, which must be disclosed. The role demands the ability to work effectively within a team, alongside a solid foundation in project management principles. Candidates should also demonstrate an understanding of technical design and analysis, familiarity with computer-aided technical applications, and knowledge of legal compliance requirements relevant to electrical work. Strong report-writing skills are essential, as is the capacity to compile and submit technical reports. The ideal candidate will possess decision-making abilities, creativity, analytical thinking, self-management, customer service orientation, and responsiveness. Good verbal and written communication skills, computer literacy, and problem-solving capabilities round out the required profile.

The core duties are extensive and varied. The artisan will perform electrical maintenance and inspections on cathodic protection and transformer rectifying units, inspect equipment for technical faults, and carry out repairs according to established standards. Servicing equipment on a scheduled basis is a key responsibility, along with ensuring quality assurance in line with specifications. Adherence to safety standards, requirements, and regulations is non-negotiable, and the role includes implementing planned maintenance programmes and updating maintenance logbooks. The incumbent must compile and submit reports as required, maintain job records and registers, and also supervise and mentor staff, indicating a leadership component. Continuous personal development is expected to keep pace with new technologies. Candidates should note that they may be required to complete both a practical and theoretical test as part of the selection process. Additionally, the office is slated to transition to the South African National Water Resources Infrastructure (SANWRI) agency, which may affect future employment conditions. This is a permanent, full-time position based at a remote dam site, offering a chance to contribute meaningfully to national water infrastructure while developing a specialised skill set.
