This position is for an Artisan Production Grade A to C specialising in electrical work, based in the Boilers unit within the Maintenance directorate at Tshwane. It is a production-grade artisan role in the public service, meaning the specific grade offered will depend on the recognised experience an applicant holds after completing their trade test certificate. The successful candidate will work as part of a technical maintenance team responsible for producing, repairing, servicing and assuring the quality of electrical equipment and facilities, all within the framework of departmental policies, legislation and safety regulations.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in the electrical field and have between zero and two years of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is also required. The role demands solid knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Public Service legislation, departmental policies and procedures, legal compliance, and computer-aided technical applications. In addition, candidates need strong production process knowledge and skills, technical report writing ability, problem solving and analytical thinking, decision making, teamwork, creativity, self-management, communication and computer literacy, as well as planning and organising skills. Personal attributes expected include being a reliable team player with a customer-focused approach.

The core duties are varied and hands-on. The artisan will produce designs according to client specifications and within the limits of the production capability, then manufacture objects using materials and equipment according to job specifications and recognised standards. Quality assurance is a recurring theme: the role requires rendering quality assurance of produced objects, inspecting equipment and facilities for technical faults, repairing equipment and facilities according to standards, and testing repaired items against specifications. The artisan must also service equipment and facilities according to an approved schedule, and again render quality assurance on all serviced and maintained items. Administrative responsibilities include compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, and keeping and maintaining a job record or register. The position also involves supervising and mentoring staff, so leadership and guidance of junior team members is expected. Keeping up with new technologies and procedures is required for continuous individual development.

Candidates should note that proof of recognised experience will be requested from shortlisted applicants, as the salary offer is based on this recognition. There are also specific conditions attached to the recruitment process. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise and one integrity or ethical conduct assessment, with technical exercises scored as part of the interview process. Suitable candidates will also be subjected to a personnel suitability check, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification and employment verification. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment or to use alternative recruitment processes. Applicants are reminded that correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates, and if no response is received within three months of the closing date, the application should be regarded as unsuccessful. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups including coloured, Indian and white applicants to apply. A confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be attached to the application. All applications must be submitted through the prescribed channel using the correct documentation; foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department will place the successful candidate according to corridor coordination and its operational needs.
