This position is for a qualified bricklayer to work as an Artisan Production Grade A within the Mpumalanga Provincial Government, based at the Nkangala District in Victor Khanye. The role sits within the public works environment, where the core mandate is to ensure that all government buildings are maintained to a safe, functional, and compliant standard. As the bricklayer artisan, you will be responsible for both routine upkeep and new construction work across the government property portfolio in the district. The post is graded under the Occupation Specific Dispensation, which reflects the technical nature of the role and the specialised trade skills required.
To be considered for this position, candidates must hold a Grade 12 certificate together with an appropriate Trade Test certificate in bricklaying. In addition, practical experience as a Tradesman Aid is required, meaning you should already have a solid grounding in the trade and be ready to work independently as a qualified artisan. The department is looking for someone with a working knowledge of the legislative prescripts governing the Public Service, as well as a strong understanding of Occupational Health and Safety requirements. Quality control, record keeping, computer literacy, and effective verbal and written communication skills are also essential competencies for this post. You will need to be flexible and willing to work overtime and standby duty when required, as the maintenance of public buildings often demands urgent attention outside normal working hours.
The main duties of the role are varied and hands-on. You will be expected to compile material quantities for each project, ensuring that the correct supplies are ordered and available for the work at hand. A significant part of the job involves maintaining all government buildings, including carrying out new work and alterations. You will also be required to execute artisan production work, which includes performing repairs, conducting inspections, and ensuring that all work meets quality assurance standards. Legal compliance is a key responsibility, meaning you must ensure that all activities adhere to relevant regulations and building standards. In addition to the physical trade work, you will compile progress reports on projects and monitor the performance of Tradesman Aids and learners under your supervision, helping to develop junior staff and ensure that work is completed to the required standard.
As with all public service recruitment, there are several important conditions attached to this vacancy. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified documents and may be subjected to pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. Personnel suitability checks will be conducted on the top candidates, covering criminal records, citizenship, financial standing, qualifications, and employment history. The successful appointee will be expected to enter into an Annual Performance Agreement and disclose any financial interests. The department reserves the right not to fill the post, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If you have not heard back within three months of the closing date, you should assume your application was unsuccessful. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified bricklayer who is committed to public service and wants to contribute to the upkeep of government infrastructure in the Mpumalanga region.
