This position offers an opportunity for a qualified electrician to work as an Artisan Production within the Maintenance directorate of the Department of Community Safety, based at the Far East Rand District Facility Maintenance Hub. The role is a production-focused trade post, graded under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD), meaning that the starting salary offer is determined by the level of recognized post-trade experience the successful candidate brings. The work centres on the mechanical and electrical upkeep of departmental facilities and equipment, ensuring that all production and maintenance outputs meet required standards and client specifications.
To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in electrical work, along with between zero and two years of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is also required, as the role may involve travel between sites within the district hub. The department looks for candidates with a solid working knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental strategies, and legal compliance requirements. Familiarity with computer-aided technical applications and production processes is essential, alongside practical skills such as technical report writing, problem solving, decision making, teamwork, creativity, analytical thinking, self-management, communication, computer literacy, and planning and organising. Personal attributes valued in this role include being a reliable team player with a strong customer focus.
The duties are broad and hands-on. The artisan will produce designs and objects according to client specifications, using appropriate materials and equipment within the limits of the production capability. Quality assurance forms a key part of the job, from inspecting equipment and facilities for technical faults, to repairing, testing, and servicing them against documented standards and schedules. The role also requires compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, and maintaining accurate job records or registers. In addition to technical work, the artisan is expected to supervise and mentor staff, and to keep abreast of new technologies and procedures for continuous individual development. This mix of production, maintenance, quality control, and supervisory responsibilities makes the post suitable for someone who can work independently while also supporting a team.
There are several important conditions attached to this vacancy. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from coloured, Indian and white population groups to apply, and applicants with disabilities must attach a confirmation from a registered medical practitioner. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, both of which will be scored as additional criteria during interviews. Suitable candidates will also be subject to personnel suitability checks, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification and employment verification. A foreign qualification must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Applications that are incomplete, late, or submitted via post, email or hand delivery will not be considered, and the department reserves the right not to fill the post or to use alternative recruitment processes. Placement will depend on corridor coordination and departmental needs.
