This position is for a qualified electrician working as an Artisan Production within the Maintenance Directorate, based at the Cullinan Maintenance Hub. The role sits within a government department focused on community safety, and the successful candidate will be responsible for the full cycle of electrical production and maintenance work, from interpreting client specifications through to designing, producing, repairing, and servicing equipment and facilities. It is a production-oriented trade role that requires both hands-on technical skill and the ability to work within public service regulations and safety standards.
Applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in electrical work, with a minimum of zero to two years of relevant experience acceptable. A valid driver’s licence is essential. The hiring manager will consider the salary offer based on recognised experience gained after the trade test, so shortlisted candidates should be prepared to provide proof of such experience. The role demands a solid understanding of public service legislation, policies and regulations, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Familiarity with departmental policies and strategies, legal compliance, and computer-aided technical applications is also required. Beyond technical knowledge, the job calls for strong report writing, problem solving, decision making, analytical thinking, planning and organising skills, along with effective communication and teamwork. The ideal candidate is described as a team player, customer-focused and reliable.
The core duties are varied and practical. The artisan will produce designs according to client specifications and within the limits of the production capability, then manufacture objects using appropriate materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. Quality assurance is a key part of the work, covering both newly produced items and serviced or repaired equipment. The role includes inspecting equipment and facilities for technical faults, repairing them to standards, testing repaired items against specifications, and servicing equipment according to schedule. Administrative responsibilities include compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, and maintaining a job record or register. In addition, the artisan may be expected to supervise and mentor more junior staff, and must keep up with new technologies and procedures for continuous professional development.
This post carries several important conditions. Applications are only accepted through the prescribed process, and the department has indicated that it will not accept posted, emailed or hand-delivered submissions. A fully completed and signed Z83 form must be accompanied by a comprehensive CV; certified qualifications are only required from shortlisted candidates. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. All shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise and one integrity or ethical conduct assessment, and these will be scored as additional criteria during interviews. Suitable candidates will also undergo a personnel suitability check, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification and employment verification. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups including coloured, Indian and white applicants to apply, and confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be attached. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment or to use alternative recruitment processes, and placement will depend on corridor coordination and departmental needs. If candidates do not receive a response within three months, they should consider their application unsuccessful.
