The Department of Community Safety is seeking a qualified and experienced electrician to fill the role of Artisan Production: Electrical at the Tshwane District Maintenance Hub, operating under the Maintenance Directorate. This is a production-focused position within a specialised electrical services unit, meaning the incumbent will be responsible for both creating new electrical outputs and maintaining existing infrastructure to a high standard. The post is based in Tshwane and offers a competitive public service salary package with benefits, with the final offer determined by the level of recognised post-trade-test experience brought to the role. This is a hands-on technical position that also requires administrative, supervisory, and client-focused skills, making it ideal for an individual who combines practical electrical expertise with the ability to work within government procedures and regulations.
Applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in electrical work, together with between zero and two years of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is essential, as the role may involve travelling to various sites within the district. The ideal candidate will have a sound working knowledge of public service legislation, policies, and regulations, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Familiarity with departmental policies, strategies, and procedures is also required, along with knowledge of legal compliance and computer-aided technical applications. In terms of softer skills, the department is looking for someone with strong technical report writing, problem-solving, decision-making, analytical, and planning abilities. The successful applicant must be a team player who is customer-focused, reliable, and capable of working independently. Attributes such as creativity, self-management, good communication, and solid computer literacy are also essential for success in this role.
The core duties of this position are varied and centre on the full production and maintenance cycle. The artisan will be expected to produce designs according to client specifications and within the limits of the hub’s production capability, then manufacture objects using the appropriate materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. Quality assurance is a key responsibility, both for newly produced objects and for serviced or maintained equipment and facilities. The role also involves inspecting equipment and facilities to identify technical faults, repairing these according to standards, and testing repaired items against specifications to ensure they function correctly. Routine servicing must be carried out according to schedule, and the incumbent must maintain accurate job records and registers. The artisan will be required to compile and submit technical reports, provide inputs to the operational plan, and supervise and mentor staff. Keeping up with new technologies and procedures is expected for continuous individual development, ensuring the unit remains current and effective.
There are several important conditions attached to this vacancy. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups, including coloured, Indian, and white applicants, to apply; a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be attached where applicable. All shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments, one practical exercise and one integrity or ethical conduct assessment, and the results of these may be used as an additional criterion during the interview process. Successful candidates will also be subject to a personnel suitability check, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification, and employment verification. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and placement will be determined according to corridor coordination and departmental needs. Applicants should note that only a completed, signed Z83 form and a comprehensive CV are required at the application stage, with certified copies of qualifications requested only from shortlisted candidates, and foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
