The Department of Community Safety is looking for a qualified electrician to fill the role of Artisan Production: Electrical at its Tshwane Facility Maintenance Hub. This position sits within the Maintenance component and is responsible for the full cycle of producing, repairing, testing and servicing electrical equipment and facilities. The artisan will work as part of a team to ensure that the department’s physical infrastructure remains functional, safe and compliant with relevant legislation and standards. The role demands a hands-on approach, combining technical production skills with quality assurance and supervisory responsibilities.

To be considered, candidates must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is also required. The ideal applicant will have sound knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental strategies and procedures, legal compliance requirements, and computer-aided technical applications. Key skills include technical report writing, problem solving, analytical thinking, decision making, teamwork, creativity, self-management, clear communication, computer literacy, and planning and organising. Personal attributes expected include being a reliable team player with a customer-focused attitude.

The main duties are broad and include producing designs according to client specifications and within the limits of production capability, manufacturing objects using materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards, and performing quality assurance on all produced items. The artisan will also inspect equipment and facilities for technical faults, carry out repairs, test repaired equipment against specifications, service equipment according to schedule, and ensure quality assurance for all serviced and maintained assets. Administrative responsibilities include compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, maintaining job records and registers, and supervising and mentoring junior staff. The role also requires keeping up to date with new technologies and procedures for continuous individual development.

Several important conditions apply to this post. The salary offer is based on recognition of experience gained after the Trade Test Certificate has been obtained, and proof of such experience will be requested from shortlisted applicants. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, and the scores from these technical exercises will be used as an additional criterion during the interview process. Suitable candidates will also go through personnel suitability checks, which may include vetting, criminal record verification, citizenship checks, credit record checks, qualification verification and employment verification. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by an evaluation certificate from the South African Qualifications Authority. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups including coloured, Indian and white applicants to apply, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be attached where applicable. Due to the large volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and applicants who do not receive any response within three months of the closing date should accept that their application was unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment and may use other recruitment processes, with placement determined according to corridor coordination and departmental needs.
