The Department of Community Safety is seeking a qualified Artisan Production: Electrical to join its Maintenance directorate at the Mamelodi Facility Maintenance Hub. This role sits within a structured public-sector maintenance environment where the incumbent will be responsible for the full cycle of electrical production and maintenance work. The position is ideal for a recently trade-tested artisan with up to two years of experience who is ready to apply technical knowledge in a government facility setting, contributing to the safe and reliable operation of buildings, equipment and infrastructure.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in the electrical field and possess a valid driver’s licence. The role welcomes candidates with between zero and two years of post-trade experience, and the offered remuneration is determined based on recognition of that experience after certification. The department requires a range of technical and behavioural competencies, including sound knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental strategies and procedures, and legal compliance. Practical knowledge of computer-aided technical applications and production processes is essential, along with skills in technical report writing, problem solving, decision making, teamwork, creativity, analytical thinking, self-management, communication, computer literacy, and planning and organising. The ideal candidate is a team player, customer-focused and reliable.

The duties are broad and centre on the production, maintenance and assurance of electrical outputs. The artisan will produce designs according to client specifications and within the limits of production capability, and will manufacture objects using appropriate materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. Quality assurance forms a core part of the role: the incumbent must inspect produced objects, inspect equipment and facilities for technical faults, repair equipment and facilities according to standards, and test repaired or serviced items against specifications. Scheduled servicing of equipment and facilities is also required, along with quality assurance of serviced and maintained systems. Administrative responsibilities include compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, maintaining job records and registers, and supervising and mentoring staff. The role also expects the incumbent to stay current with new technologies and procedures for continuous individual development.

This position is subject to several important conditions. Shortlisted candidates must undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, both of which are scored as additional criteria during the interview process. Suitable candidates will be subject to personnel suitability checks, including vetting, criminal record verification, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification and employment verification. The department reserves the right not to appoint and may use other recruitment processes. Placement will occur according to corridor coordination and departmental needs. The department actively encourages youth, people with disability, and candidates from designated groups, including coloured, Indian and white applicants, to apply; confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be attached. Applicants who do not hear from the department within three months of the closing date should assume their application was unsuccessful. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate, and all application requirements must be strictly followed to avoid disqualification.
