This position is for a skilled Artisan Production specialising in Carpentry, based at the Bertha Gxowa/Germiston District Facility Maintenance Hub within the Maintenance Directorate of the Department of Community Safety. As a production artisan, the role is central to the department’s ability to maintain and improve its physical infrastructure, ensuring that facilities are safe, functional, and fit for purpose. The incumbent will work as part of a technical team responsible for delivering carpentry outputs that meet both client specifications and recognised industry standards, while also supporting broader maintenance operations across the district. This is a hands-on, production-focused role that combines practical trade work with quality assurance, supervision, and continuous improvement responsibilities.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in carpentry, with between zero and two years of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is essential. The role requires a solid working knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental strategies and procedures, legal compliance requirements, and computer-aided technical applications. Candidates should also demonstrate strong production process knowledge and skills. In terms of personal competencies, the department is looking for someone with technical report writing ability, problem-solving and analytical skills, sound decision-making, teamwork, creativity, self-management, effective communication, computer literacy, and good planning and organising capabilities. The ideal candidate will be a reliable, customer-focused team player who can work independently and collaboratively.

The main duties are wide-ranging and centre on the full production cycle. The artisan will produce designs according to client specifications and within the limits of production capability, then manufacture objects using appropriate materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. A key responsibility is rendering quality assurance of produced objects, as well as inspecting equipment and facilities for technical faults. The role also involves repairing equipment and facilities according to set standards, testing repaired items against specifications, and servicing equipment and facilities on schedule. The artisan must render quality assurance of serviced and maintained equipment and facilities, compile and submit reports, provide inputs to the operational plan, and keep and maintain a job record or register. Supervision and mentoring of staff is also required, along with keeping up with new technologies and procedures for continuous individual development.

This is an OSD-graded production artisan post with a competitive benefits package, and the offer will be based on recognised experience after the Trade Test Certificate. Shortlisted candidates will be required to provide proof of experience and will undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment, both of which will be scored as additional criteria during interviews. Suitable candidates will also be subjected to personnel suitability checks, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification, and employment verification. The department encourages youth, people with disability, coloured, Indian and white applicants to apply, and confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany the application. The successful candidate will be placed according to corridor coordination and departmental needs. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment and may use other recruitment processes. Applications must be submitted correctly as outlined in the advertisement, with the fully completed and signed Z83 form accompanied by a comprehensive CV; foreign qualifications must include a SAQA evaluation certificate. Due to the high volume of applications, correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only, and those who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should accept that their application was unsuccessful.
