MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Passed Std 07/Grade 08 with Trade Test Certificate in Plumbing.
- 2–3 years post-qualification experience in municipal or industrial water distribution systems.
- Valid Code C1 (or Code 8/EB) Driver’s License.
Skills & Competencies:
- Knowledge of trenching, pipe-fitting, pressure-reducing valves (PRVs), and bulk infrastructure.
- Ability to read utility maps, GIS layers, or reticulation engineering drawings.
- Good physical condition to operate heavy machinery (e.g., high-pressure pumps, pipe cutters).
- Strong problem-solving abilities and communication skills.
Special Working Conditions
- Required to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Required to perform standby duties, overtime, and attend to emergency after-hours pipe bursts.
Job Purpose: To perform technical duties related to the installation, maintenance, repair and fault finding of bulk water pipelines, municipal distribution reticulation networks, water meters, and pressure control systems. This role ensures uninterrupted water supply in compliance with municipal service delivery standards and safety regulations.
Key Performance Areas & Responsibilities
- Reticulation Maintenance & Repairs: Diagnose, locate, and repair burst main lines, bulk supply pipes, leaking valves, and hydrants. Isolate main distribution lines using proper valve sequences to minimize local water disruption.
- Meter Infrastructure Management: Install, replace, and calibrate domestic and bulk water meters. Test for underground leaks and carry out consumption-pattern investigations.
- New Installations: Lay, align, and join underground water pipes (HDPE, PVC, Ductile Iron) using mechanical couplings, electrofusion, or butt-welding.
- Site Supervision & Logistics Support: Supervise handyman/labourer crew activities on-site, ensuring proper usage of tools, safety equipment, and vehicles. Read and interpret underground pipe layout diagrams and schematics.
• Compliance & Reporting Complete daily job cards, material request forms, site vehicle inspection checklists, and water loss field reports. Strictly adhere to local government safety policies and the Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Act
