This position offers an opportunity for an experienced artisan to step into a supervisory foreman role within the Mpumalanga provincial government, specifically attached to the GMT (Government Motor Transport) or related technical unit. The three available posts are based at Nkangala Middleburg, Nkangala Emakhazeni, and Bohlabela Mashishing, and the role is graded under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for artisan foremen. As an Artisan Foreman Grade A, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of artisans and ensuring that all technical work is completed to specification, within production capabilities, and in line with recognised standards. The role is a blend of hands-on technical oversight, quality assurance, and people management, requiring someone who can supervise, mentor, and guide subordinate artisans while also producing designs and repairing equipment and facilities as needed.
Applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate and a recognised Trade Test certificate, coupled with at least three years of practical experience as an Artisan. A valid driver’s licence is essential, and candidates must be willing to work overtime and be available for standby duties. The department is looking for individuals with strong technical analysis knowledge, computer literacy, and a sound understanding of legal compliance and technical report writing. Problem-solving, decision-making, planning, organising, and project management skills are also required, along with the ability to manage change, work as part of a team, and communicate effectively. Good interpersonal relations and the capacity to work hard under pressure are essential personal attributes for this demanding environment.
The core duties of the post involve supervising the production of designs according to client specifications and within the limits of production capability, as well as producing objects using the correct materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. The foreman must inspect equipment and facilities for technical faults, repair them according to standards, and test repaired equipment and facilities to ensure they function correctly. Quality assurance is a key responsibility, as is the servicing and maintenance of equipment and facilities. The role also requires strict adherence to safety standards, requirements, and regulations, and the supervision and mentoring of artisans under the foreman’s charge. This is a supervisory position that demands both technical competence and leadership ability.
Shortlisted candidates should be aware of the department’s rigorous selection process. All shortlisted applicants will be required to submit certified documents on or before the day of the interview, and foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA with proof provided. Candidates must disclose any business interests with the Organ of State or additional remunerative work outside their normal duties. The selection process may include practical exercises, integrity assessments, and personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, financial standing, qualifications, and employment references. The successful candidate will be expected to enter into an Annual Performance Agreement and disclose financial interests annually. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If no feedback is received within three months after the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. This is a permanent, OSD-graded post offering a chance to contribute to public service infrastructure and vehicle maintenance while developing a team of artisans.
