This position is for an Artisan Assistant within the Rural Health Services directorate, based at George Regional Hospital. The role is essential for maintaining a safe, functional, and well-presented healthcare environment, supporting the hospital’s broader infrastructure and building maintenance teams. As an Artisan Assistant, you will work under the guidance of qualified artisans and contribute to the hands-on upkeep of hospital buildings, fixtures, fittings, and equipment. The work is practical and varied, making it ideal for someone with a solid background in general maintenance who enjoys physical, trade-related work within an institutional setting.
To be considered, applicants need a minimum of Grade 10 or equivalent education, alongside appropriate experience in general building maintenance, minor repairs, or assisting artisans with maintenance tasks in a building or similar environment. This experience should demonstrate practical familiarity with the kind of repair and upkeep work expected in a hospital or comparable institution. A valid Code B/EB/C1 driver’s licence is an inherent requirement, as is the ability to perform heavy physical labour. Candidates must also be available for standby and overtime duties, which are necessary to ensure that critical maintenance needs are met around the clock. Additionally, the role demands a sound working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements and safe working practices, given the potential hazards of a healthcare setting.
Key duties include performing minor maintenance and repairs to hospital buildings and infrastructure, as well as assisting with more specialised tasks such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, painting, glazing, and mechanical maintenance. You will support artisans in carrying out repairs, installations, alterations, preventative maintenance, and minor refurbishment projects. This includes preparing work areas, tools, equipment, and materials, and helping with dismantling, assembly, installation, and movement of equipment and components. The role also calls for good planning, organisational, and time-management abilities, along with strong record-keeping skills. You must be able to follow technical instructions accurately, work independently when required, and collaborate effectively as part of a maintenance team. Practical problem-solving skills, technical aptitude, reliable judgment, and careful use of tools and materials are all essential.
This is a public service position within the Western Cape Government health sector, offering a stable career pathway. Applicants are reminded that no payment of any kind is required when applying. Shortlisted candidates will be expected to undergo a practical test as part of the selection process, which will assess their hands-on skills and suitability for the duties described. The post is advertised via the standard public service vacancy circular, and interested individuals should ensure they meet all requirements and are prepared for a physically demanding yet rewarding maintenance role in a hospital environment.
