This position offers an opportunity to contribute directly to the social development mandate of the Western Cape Government by providing essential administrative support within the directorate responsible for vulnerable groups. Based within the Department of Social Development, the Administrative Support Officer acts as a linchpin for the unit, ensuring that day-to-day operations run smoothly so that the team can focus on delivering services to those who need them most. The role is situated in a dynamic public service environment where adherence to governance frameworks, financial regulations, and procedural correctness is paramount. As such, the post is graded at salary level 07 and forms part of the broader provincial administration structure, working closely with management support staff and other directorates.
To be considered for this role, candidates must hold a qualification at NQF level 6 or higher, coupled with at least one year of relevant working experience. However, the position demands far more than formal credentials. The ideal applicant will possess a comprehensive working knowledge of the legislative and regulatory frameworks that govern social development and public administration, including the Public Finance Management Act, National and Provincial Treasury Regulations, and labour relations legislation. Familiarity with modern governance systems, public service procedures, and the functioning of sister departments is also essential, as is an understanding of the regional political, economic, and social dynamics that affect the Western Cape. In addition to this knowledge base, the successful candidate will demonstrate strong practical skills in numeracy, computer literacy, planning and organising, time management, communication, research, and the ability to perform effectively under pressure.
The core duties of the post are varied and require a proactive, organised approach. The Administrative Support Officer will render line administrative support services and assist management support staff with a wide range of administrative duties. A key responsibility is coordinating monitoring and evaluation activities and maintaining the associated information systems, ensuring that data is accurate and readily available for decision-making. The role also extends to supporting the directorate with supply chain management processes and financial administration, which means the post holder must be comfortable working with procurement procedures and financial prescripts. Furthermore, the position involves rendering advice and liaising with internal and external stakeholders on administrative matters, requiring clear communication and sound judgement.
Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process is thorough. Those invited to interview will be required to submit duly completed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe, and failure to do so may result in disqualification. All shortlisted candidates will also undertake two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and another assessing integrity and ethical conduct. The department’s selection process will be guided by its employment equity targets, and by applying, candidates consent to reference checks with previous employers, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a demanding but rewarding role for a detail-oriented professional who is committed to supporting the province’s most vulnerable citizens through efficient and ethical administration.
